Carpet opinions...

OK, we have a VERY old tutor style house. We have all hardwood floors in the entire house with area rugs.

DH and I are considering getting wall to wall carpet installed in the bedrooms upstairs. Here is the question:

We only have 2 bedrooms upstairs. We know that we definitely want the carpet in both bedrooms. The question lies in whether or not we extend the carpet to the upstairs hallway, which in turn would mean that we have to carpet the stairs.

For comfort sake, it would make sense to just carpet everything. But I'm not sure having the stairs carpeted would go with the first floor of the house.

Without you being able to actually see our house because I don't have any pictures at the moment, what do you think? Would it look funny to have the stairs carpeted and have no wall to wall carpet downstairs? Would it make more sense to just do the bedrooms separate and leave it at that... not do the hallway upstairs or the stairs? Decisions, decisions!

Re: Carpet opinions...

Easy one for me...

I would carpet ALL of upstairs and put a runner of that same carpet on the stairs (if they can do this). This way you see the wood and it transitions into the wood floors downstairs.

i had wood floors that lead up to carpeted stairs.

didn't look funny at all. it's almost like your entryway to your bedrooms.

go for it!

They can do this. Home Depot cut and bound a carpet for us as a runner and we continued it in our upstairs hall. Our bedrooms are carpeted in a different carpet but the thresholds at each doorway divide them nicely Chat Icon

Re: Carpet opinions...

well, I've been in your house so no pics required....what I would do is probably do a nice runner up the stairs which would kind of blend the upstairs with the downstairs.

Re: Carpet opinions...

our house will have carpeting on the entire second floor (loft/family room + 2 bedrooms) the stairs leading up will have the same carpeting as the second floor......downstairs is all hard floors....tile in the foyer and kitchen and i think we are putting wood or wood laminate in the living/dining rooms, master and office.....

i think if you do carpet upstairs it would look fine if you did matching carpet on the stairs as well.....

i love the look of plain wood stairs but it's cheaper and easier for us to keep the carpet and it's less slippery for when we have kids....plus i think it looks fine....

what is on your stairs now?

Re: Carpet opinions...

We have carpeting in every bedroom - a wood floor hallway, and wood stairs.

Initially we were gonna carpet the hallway but we decided we liked the look of the wood hallway instead.

Re: Carpet opinions...

I would not carpet the hallway and stairs. Just carpet the bedrooms. I like that look better than all carpeting.

We have wood stairs and hallway and 3 of our bedrooms are carpeted- the MB is not.
