This is very impressive that so many of you can touch type!

I'm more surprised when I come across someone who CAN'T touch type. For some reason, I find more men who can't than women.

With kids having computers from infancy, it's kind of essential to know now. I'm trying to teach my nephew so he doesn't end up a hunt-and-pecker. Chat Icon

I definitely agree. Right now, DS is 4.5, so his fingers aren't big enough to touch-type on a regular keyboard (I should give him my laptop more often....), but he hunts and pecks faster than some adults I know! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Both DC will definitely learn how to touch-type. In today's society, it's a life-skill.

Re: Can you touch-type?

I took typing in 7th or 8th grade on a old manual typewriter!! I don't think it helped me since I didn't type again (on any regular basis) until my summer job sophomore year of HS.

I sorta don't look at the keyboard and have no idea anymore what the "proper" placement is ... I still type pretty fast but always suck at typing tests!!!

(It just took me forever to type this!!! HAHAHA!!)

ETA: I do use all my fingers ... although as someone else said - not sure about the thumbs. What are they techically supposed to be used for?

Re: Can you touch-type?

I had a headache yesterday, so I was typing with my eyes closed. Yup, I can touch-type! I don't know my exact speed, but i'm pretty fast. I'm just not as good with hitting the numbers.

ETA: My DH, who works with computers, types with two fingers! Chat Icon

I actually don't use my left thumb for much. The right thumb is for the space bar. I sometimes use my left thumb for the space bar, but not usually. I just use it to give myself a thumbs-up when I make a good post here. External Image

I can type and have a talk to someone at the same time. That was the one useful thing I learned in highschool. I can't do numbers though, I have to look.

ETA: I cannot write though. My handwriting is terrible. I type a lot faster than I write.

Re: Can you touch-type?

I get that a lot too... someone will come over and ask me something but i'll continue to type an email while listening to them and looking at them. I'm actually better at typing without even looking at the screen.

When I took the typing test for my job now my speed was 82wpm.

ETA: I also took a typing class in high school (a a a space semi semi semi space Chat Icon) if I didn't I don't think i'd be such a great typer.

Only if I don't think about it.

Once I start to think about the fact that I'm touch typing I start to fumble.

learned from my dad. We're both pretty fast. We also both play the piano which helps with dexterity.

I can't look down.

Touchtype with an occasional glance at the keyboard when I think I've missed a key.

Same here. I look down before I start,
I don't keep my fingers in the proper "stance" like mavis beacon taught me Chat Icon but I can type pretty darn fast.

Re: Can you touch-type?

I took a mandatory class in junior high school & I had a software program on my home computer for learning to type, but I am still awful.

I sorta start out in thr right position, but I rely on my left hand more than my rights & I totally look.

I type semi- quickly, but with a lot of midtakes.

Re: Can you touch-type?

Yes, I can! I don't think I learned how to do it...it just kind of happened after working in corporate America. They like to have everything done yesterday and I was wasting time typing with two fingers, lol. Now I can speed type and not even look at the keyboard. Unless I am doing accounting then I look at the numbers so I don't mess up. Chat Icon

Re: Can you touch-type?

I touch type. I never took a class. I have just been using computers from a young age.

I realized from GoldenRod that I am apparently doing it "wrong" I don't use all ten fingers.

I also took typing in high school- or maybe it was even junion high- i remember those old machines and the white out tape- blasts from the past.
but yes, I can touch type without looking & I can do the same thing, talk & have a conversation and finish typing something without looking.
i think at this point I can prob type about 80-85wpm

Re: Can you touch-type?

I never look.

Last I checked I was over 110 wpm. I had to take a type test when I applied for a temp job when I moved to NYC back in 1999. I’m in insurance.

But I noticed that I still can’t type the numbers which is stupid cause I can do any of the symbols there but my brain won’t acknowledge that they are the same keys for numbers. I can still fly back and forth from the numbers to the keys though.

I can use 10-key on both a telepad and calpad (telephone and calculator are flipped).

I learned to type in Middle School on them old type writers that you had to move the arm back at the end of each line. Lets not talk about correction tape and getting the lines to match or centering a page…. Remember count every other character including spaces from the middle of the line and then take that number and go backwards from the middle of the page or some such nonsense. I still know how to do it if I have to!!!!

I use the slide tray for my keyboard so I never actually see it at all. Most people don’t even realize I am typing at all since my keyboard is hidden. So yeah, I freaks them out when I talk, listen and type.

Hubby and I use a Kinetic Keyboard with separated and sunk in keys (you actually lay your hands into the keyboard and practically just wiggle your fingers to type.) This has greatly improved our speeds.

ETA:
I have worked in Claims, marketing, Excess, International, Broker and Agency jobs in insurance.

Hubby works for a financial advisor.

So we both type.. A lot. I remember back in the days of MIRC (internet chatting) I would type faster than people on T1’s could respond!!!!
