Can you touch-type?

Just wondering how many people touch-type, and how many "hunt and peck". I took a typing class in HS, and even though some of my friends made fun of me at first, they started getting jealous when I could type on the computer faster than them....

It's funny at work. I'll be typing an email or something, and someone stops at my office. I'll turn to acknowledge them, but I'll still finish typing my email.

Them:" How can you do that? How do you know what you're typing?"

Me:"Well, the keys haven't moved in the last 20 years, so it's not really that hard."

NEVER.... i wish... this girl at my job can be on the phone type and talk to someone at the same time and i am blown away by it

Many years ago, I had my mom take a typing test for timing (she was a secretary for decades). After a little while, it kept beeping. She asked what it was.

She was typing faster than the computer to take in her keys!

I don't think she could do that now, since PCs are really fast now, but I still get a kick out of the fact that she could actually type faster than the computer could accept her keystrokes.....


I often type one thing while I'm talking on the phone, or talking to a person.

im starting to type without looking. it took me a longtime to do.

Touchtype with an occasional glance at the keyboard when I think I've missed a key.

I don't know my wpm, but I touchtype without looking. In college it freaked one of my roomates out that I would have complete conversations with her (looking straight at her), and I was typing at the same time.

I do not need to look at my fingers or the screen to type, however, I do not type properly (starting with homerow).

By the time I took the computer applications class in high school I had been typing too long improperly and made up my own method, retraining myself just wasn't an option.

But I do about 60 WPM, so the "Jess" method works for me

I do have some co-workers that freak out a bit when they come into my office to tell me something and I look at them and continue typing whatever document I am working on.

I type over 72 wpm, without looking; all ten fingers in the correct spot....thanks to going to an all-girl Catholic school, in Freshman year, they MADE you take a touch-typing class.

I don't know how many words per minute but I type very fast without looking. My job is technology based and I practically live on my computer.

I actually can't look at the keyboard, that's when I mess up. My boss hated working on my keyboard because I had worn off the paint on the home keys and the b, n and m on the bottom row. He's a hunt and peck so he couldn't figure out what the keys were.

I took the class in high school too. It's probably the only thing that I learned 20 years ago that I still use daily!

thanks to my 9th grade typing teacher - mr tucker, i can touch type w/out a problem. i hated him then - but oh how i've learned to love him!!!

I took typing in HS, and I'm glad I did!!! All the papers in college....

I don't know my WPM, but I sometimes have to look at the keyboard.

(I think we only type w/9 fingers. I don't use my left thumb for any keystrokes.)

This is very impressive that so many of you can touch type!

I can touch type, putting my fingers in the correct locations and all , I just choose not to!.
I do look at the key pad (for reassurance), but I don't have to

i am trying to force myself to learn how to type without looking, and i can usually get it right most of the time, but often i have to look down once or twice to "remind" myself of where a letter is.

actually for this post i only had to look down twice!!!

ETA: if it's a word that's hard to spell i always look - too much effort not to!!

I def want to take a class for it, because I need to look at the keyboard for the most part, but only type with 6 fingers, and its mostly my left hand.

I voted for less then 10 but more than 2.

The only finger I don't type with is my right pinky. I don't know why - I just can't use that one finger.

I'm getting better at not having to look at the keyboard, I glance down every once on a while.


P.S. I messed up alot typing this post becuase I was trying to hard and thinking about it too much.

I type incredibly fast. No matter where I am, someone is always telling me.

I love typing. I can't lie.

We had to take typing in high school but once I got to college, i took a computer class, and I finished the class halfway through the semester. Woo hoo

i CAN type without looking, but it takes a little longer

Learned touch-typing in high school while taking a commercial course. I still have the skill although my speed has decreased.
