Can you please share the sleep training book/method you have used?

I am at the end of my rope.
My DD is 3.5 months old and sleeps absolutely TERRIBLE.
It's wearing on me, my job, my marriage, my state of mind.
I just dont' know how much longer this can go on without someone having a mental breakdown!

If you read a book by someone like Sears, Ferber, etc can you recommend it? And what you liked about that particular method vs others?

Thanks so much!

Re: Can you please share the sleep training book/method you have used?

i used the baby whisperer book - it worked very well for us at that age

by 4 months my baby was napping for 2-2 hour naps plus a cat nap and then sleeping from 7:30- 7am with a quick middle of the night nursing session

i liked using the pat and shush method to get to sleep

it also worked to try the pacifier at that age it helped us a lot for soothing purposes

I liked the No cry sleep solution. It's a non CIO method. Good luck!

Re: Can you please share the sleep training book/method you have used?

I also found Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child to be really helpful.

My DD was 16 weeks yesterday and has been sleeping 7pm-7am for about 2 weeks now. We're still working on naps but it has been getting better and better each day.

I read the baby whisperer and the other one Happy Baby whatever - I used the pacifier, and always put him down tired, but still awake (kind of that drunk-tired look they get when they're alomst out and can't keep their eyes open) -

I also think I had a pretty easy baby as far as sleeping went though.

Same here, and I did CIO with both kids. DD didn't STTN until 5.5 months but she was much better with naps and going down for the night once I read this book!

I was there too!!! at 13 weeks i had to just bite the bullet. I literally bought every book out there....i was going out of my mind. finally talked to my ped and she said to let her cry. I tried at the first nap the next day. she cried for 10 mins on and off and went to sleep on her own. next nap, same and 3rd nap, went down without crying at all. nighttime, she went down and cried for a bit but slept 8 hours straight. I realize that she was young BUT i was adamant about watching her closely. I wasnt going to let her cry more than 15 or 20 minutes...but she never even gave me a chance to give up. She now sleeps 11-12 hours straight at night and goes down herself 3 naps a day. It has changed my life. Again, I know shes young and I know how many people dont approve of this on here, but i was at my wits end, getting very depressed and feeling like my marriage was going down the tubes. We were exhausted. I was willing to try letting her cry for just short amounts of time. I mean, i didnt feel like 10 mins could hurt her. how about just testing it out and seeing what happens?

To answer your original question, i used a combo of ferber weissbluth and the baby whisperer. DD was on a routine from early on. Eat, activity, sleep. we did have a nap routine for her, so we had the foundation for the naps...which is why i think the transition from me rocking her sleep to her going to sleep on her own was so easy. The key is to just let them learn to sleep on their own. I did originally try a modified version, where I would rock till very drowsy, put her down and if she cried, i would pick up and repeat until she feel asleep. It didnt quite work for us, but something you could try? I would just try to give your DC every opportunity to learn to fall asleep on their own.

i know exactly how you feel...so i hope you can find an answer soon!

Thank you so much for telling me your story.
I have been getting SO depressed lately- I feel like we can't even enjoy our baby daughter because we are just in survival mode and I feel like we are just wishing these months away. It's really sad because I know we should be cherishing this time...but I just want her to be 5 years old already! Chat Icon

I was in tears last night at 4 am- as she was screaming bloody murder- I feel like we are doing something wrong or there is somethign wrong with our baby....but the ped can't find anything physically wrong with her and doesn't really offer much advice for sleep issues.

I will look into all of these methods and I appreciate you sharing your story- gives me some hope! Chat Icon

Re: Can you please share the sleep training book/method you have used?

The Baby Sleep Solution - it's a short read. (I felt like I couldnt sit down and read the bigger books) I started using it when DD was about 6 or 7 weeks old, and by 11 weeks she STTN for the first time! It took her a few more weeks to repeat it consistently, but by 4 months she's been a good sleeper.

I liked their method because it was about consistency and a natural transition. Allowing the baby to do what they need to do with help/coaxing from the parents. AND (and this was the best part) getting your baby to sleep for 12 hours! Its SO nice to be able to put DD down early and still be able to eat dinner WITH DH, get to do some things around the house, relax, watch TV, etc before getting to bed a reasonable hour!

DD typcially falls asleep around 7:45 and wakes up at 6:20 during the week, and around 6:45 on the weekends (less noise in the early morning on the weekends). so while it's not exactly 12 hours, it's still amazing! Dont get me wrong, she has her nights where she gets up (teeth, gas, whatever else), but its usually not typical and she usually gets back into her grove quickly.

I didnt go by EVERYTHING they said right away, I modified where I thought was necessary. and i didnt follow the nap routine. I always let her do what she wanted with that and she eventually fell into a 3 naps a day routine on her own that seems to work for her.

I totally recommend the book! :)

good luck!!!

What does she do if you put her down awake?

Last night was my first night trying to put DD down awake. I felt like she cried for HOURS but when I looked at the clock it was less than 15 minutes (that was going to be my limit to go get her)

I may get flamed since she is so young, but so far it worked!

Re: Can you please share the sleep training book/method you have used?

Thanks for posting all of these...I need it to! DD is 10 and a half weeks and sometimes, she goes about 7 hours, but other times, she's up til 3 or 4 am and I want to cry! I know that I need to be more consistent, and try and let her cry it out for a little bit, 10 or 15 minutes, but I also feel that she is still really little, not even 3 months technically! What are your thoughts? Should I read these books? Also, what are you dressing your dc in at night, I know if they are warm, they will sleep better!

Healthy Sleep Habits, is a must for any new mom! Its not just a CIO book.

But I needed like step by step instructions on what to do exactly, my brain was just not functioning well enough to deduce a plan from Healthy Sleep Habits at the time.

I followed:
The Baby Sleep Solution: A Proven Program to Teach Your Baby to Sleep Twelve Hours a Night by Giordano

This was the best thing in the whole world, and I never let DS CIO till 6m. He was sleeping 10 hours a night at 3m, after this method. Before that, he was eating every 4.

It all depends on the baby IMO, if its working, she's only stressed out for 15 min and learning how to fall asleep on her own, which is a skill that lasts a lifetime! Well worth it, imagine how much suffering your saving her in the future not being able to fall asleep.
I applaud you! Chat Icon

If I put her down and she is still awake she starts to fuss- which is fine- but the fussing soon turns into full on cries and then bloody murder screaming.
She needs to fall asleep while taking her last bottle of the day- so I feel like that is an issue too- I've been reading online that they need to learn to fall asleep unassisted- so that if they wake at night they know how to get back to sleep without a bottle or rocking or whatever.

I am thinking of doing what you did too- seeing how long she can cry it out for.
I thought she was young for that, but maybe not.
If it works, I'm all for it!

Re: Can you please share the sleep training book/method you have used?

Health Sleep Habits Happy Child (Weissbluth) is also my Bible. I do think Ferber (Solving Your Child's Sleep Problems) is helpful re: sleep associations and providing details on how to do graduated extinction, but for my DD, sleep begets sleep (the Weissbluth philosophy) fit her best. I did read the No Cry Sleep Solution as well and it's basically Weissbluth + Ferber sleep associations minus any kind of CIO so if you're getting those, I'd save your money and not get the last one. Weissbluth is a lot more than CIO. Also, in the wee beginning, I used Karp (Happiest Baby on the Block), but I think you're past that age.
