I always find it funny when people who aren't from LI try to pronounce some of the names around here. I'm in Ronkonkoma, and people from out of the area are like "You live in Ronk......." Me: "Ron-Konk-O-ma, yeah". Hauppauge, Patchogue, Quogue, and even Islip confuse the heck out of people....
We just moved to Ronkonkoma...I love giving my address to family and friends...once I say Ronkonkoma - they say "Wait, umm...spell that?!"
When we first moved to Ronkonkoma I got the same thing from all my family.

I hear Wan-Tog all the time for Wantagh. And forget about when I lived in Massapequa.

Re: Can non-locals pronounce where you live?
Most people can pronounce my town because it's hard to screw up Smithtown.

Re: Can non-locals pronounce where you live?
Haven't heard a butchering of my town but my street always brings up some interesting takes on the name.
The town I work in, Hauppauge, is a tough one for non-locals.

As far as I'm aware, no one has a problem saying Brooklyn.

Re: Can non-locals pronounce where you live?
People used to butcher Massapequa when I lived there.
I work in Parsippany and people kill that one too.
It's funny to let the telemarketers try to figure it out!!

Yes, some people can't pronounce Maspeth.
What's so hard about that
I grew up in Middle Village and everyone who is not from the area says "MAZ-peth"....we always said "MASS-peth".

I'm in Patchogue too, no one ever says it right who doesnt live on LI. Same goes for Hauppauge where I used to work.. people would pronounce it "Hop-a-gue".
