Can non-locals pronounce where you live?
I always find it funny when people who aren't from LI try to pronounce some of the names around here. I'm in Ronkonkoma, and people from out of the area are like "You live in Ronk......." Me: "Ron-Konk-O-ma, yeah". Hauppauge, Patchogue, Quogue, and even Islip confuse the heck out of people....

Yes, I alwasy get Is-lip when anyone tries to pronounce my address.

my town isn't hard to pronounce, so yes, they get it right. but when DH first moved here from OH, he had a hard time with towns like Hauppauge

Yes, and No. People from England can say it, but people from the states have real trouble grasping it. Chorlton. Everyone says Charlton, no its with an O in the middle. Chorlton!

Funny, my friend from Minneapolis was taking the train here from NYC. I kept telling her to go to Wantagh....she thought I was sending her to Montauk!! What a trip that would have been, huh??

We just moved to Ronkonkoma...I love giving my address to family and friends...once I say Ronkonkoma - they say "Wait, umm...spell that?!"

my town isn't hard, but to get folks outside the NY area to spell Holbrook, they either do
HolDbrook or HolEbrook
I always double check.

My roommate in college was from Jersey. My other roomie was from Patchogue. The Jersie roomie used to call it Patch-a-goo.

With Islip I either here people say Ice-lip or Iss (like hiss) lip. Which do Islip residents prefer, lol?
As for my town it is easy to say yet hard for people to find!

My town is called Dunellen (NJ) and it is pronounced DUN-ellen. People call it Dune-len, etc...and I work in Piscataway and that gets massacred too...and Watchung that is near me too...

OMG my DH grew up in Holbrook....whenever he would mention Yaphank, I always in my mind would think "Ya-fank"...

We've been working on one of our offices in Wantagh and I keep hearing Won - tag.
Massapequa was hard too. "Massa... Massa... How do you say it?"
And everyone OOS always got a chuckle out of Hicksville. They never thought I was serious.
Lastly, Syosset became Sy-O-set.

I hear cah-mick a lot, but I think that was actually the indian prononciation of commack.

when my cousin from FL came to the nyc area for my wedding... she had to take the train to my place. when she called to tell me that the nj transit train was in metuchen...she pronounced it me-too-chin (with a spanish accent). she then broke out laughing.
at that moment, i reminded her of FLAGLER (a large avenue in miami) which no one gets right, either.

And I've also heard Is-slip.

I think ice-lip. Iss-Lip is how solicitors say it! Thats how I know when they are calling!
