what is it if you have random sharp hot shooting pains?? well i guess i usually have it around the time that i am engorged....i was at the grocery store and i had to hold my boobs in pain! people musta thought i was weird

I used to get quick random sharp pains during the first few months. I assumed it had something to do with milk production or possibly letdown.

My LC would weigh Alexa before and after a feeding to see how much she was getting. SHe would watch a nursing session and see how she was feeding and check the latch frequently. It helped to give us an idea of how much she was taking in each session and pointed out that my latch needed to be better... better latch = more milk intake.

Also, we has to really stimulate her to nurse well or she would get lazy during feedings and not eat enough and while I THOUGHT she was getting a lot per session she really wasn't... it wasn't my supply it was her nursing...

oh, wow... interesting! i wish i had a little scale like they have in the doctor's office! Chat Icon that's really interesting though- thanks. wasn't sure what else they would do, but what you shared makes a lot of sense. thanks!

You can buy the baby scale at BRU.

BTW- My second DD nursed every 2 hours until she was almost 5 months oldChat Icon . In the very beginning, she nursed every HOUR (until about 6 weeks). Some babies just need to nurse more. As long as there are enough dirty/wet diapers and the baby is gaining, your supply is likely fine.

Remember- the pump is NO indicator of supply.

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**

Has anyone ever had a fever while breastfeeding? Did you still breastfeed? I just noticed I had 102.4 and have been feeding her all day. I'm going to try to go to the dr. tomorrow if I still have it in the morning. I read on kellymom that its ok to feed still but Im nervous. I dont think its mastitis b/c my breasts don't hurt, just tired and have a headache and fever..
Any advice is greatly appreciated!!Chat Icon

Have you tried a LC??? Anywho.. I don't agree with your ped. It takes 12 weeks for your supply to stabilize. That being said, its not the end of the world if you supplement. You could supplement for a few weeks and if your stress level goes down you could see a rise in your supply as a result....

So what you need to do... Happy mom= happy baby. Only YOU know your breaking point and how much you can take!!

We are here for whatever you need!

Chat Icon

no, i have not tried a LC, but I am going to go to a BFing suppor group run by the hospital and the nurse that runs it has the LC certification, so I need to ask her some more questions.

in your experience, what else would a LC tell me to do? i feel like i did the feedings every 2-3 hours, drinking a lot of water ,supplements, etc.? i don't have latching or sucking problems, so what else is there?

My LC would weigh Alexa before and after a feeding to see how much she was getting. SHe would watch a nursing session and see how she was feeding and check the latch frequently. It helped to give us an idea of how much she was taking in each session and pointed out that my latch needed to be better... better latch = more milk intake.

I agree about the LC. I know the LC who runs the group you are refering to and she is absolutely wonderful, but there is a limited amount of time during the group and she doesn't see you feed. I saw a LC and she spent an hour (or 2, I can't remember - that time was such a blur) with me, and we spoke, she observed DD latching and it was very helpful. Some even take insurance. Give it a try!

As far as "calling it a day", as you mentioned in a previous post, why do you need to? Since you are willing to continue to try and BF as much as you can, there is no reason why you need to put a label on your situation. Just do your best, don't stress or expect too much from yourself, keep talking to people (LC, support group, etc.) and hopefully it will come. It is good that your child is getting some breast milk and latching, so just go with it. I know its hard, but it sounds like you will feel better knowing that it is a work in progress (as Ethel has told me about my situation), rather than having the expectation that "this may be the time". You are doing great! It is wonderful that you are continuing to persevere. Maybe I will see you Wednesday, if you go to the group.

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**

okay, what's up with DD latching and sucking for less than 5 minutes and then kicking her legs, waving her arms, making noises and then unlatching. then when she unlatches, she cries. if i put her back on, she decreases the amount of the time on until she won't latch on anymore. if you have read my previous posts, you know i have severe supply issues (I basically FF and supplement with BM, because she never gets enough.) could it be that she is hardly getting anything at this point? even less than usual?

DS is 10 weeks old.

At 10 weeks old, about how long did you DC feed for? Or how many ounces of BM did they take? And how often?

Just curious. Thanks! Chat Icon

when my DD does this (though without crying) she usually needs a burp...once I burp her she goes right back on. not sure if this helps!Chat Icon

Same here. DD used to have some stomach pain, so it caused this type of behavior. Burping can help, or I would sometimes give her a break from the feeding. She outgrew it. When I was producing less than usual milk, DD would latch longer, not shorter b/c she would try to get more milk.

DS has always been a very slow nurser. He was still nursing for 45 minutes per session every 3-3.5 hours. If he took a pumped bottle, he took around 4 oz.

as other posters suggested, baby just may need to be burped, but i was in your situation in the end, where i was equally FF and BFing, and i noticed my supply QUICKLY dropping..and she was becoming more and more aggitated at the breast...for many reasons, the bottle is easier, the bottle is instant gratification, she doesnt have to work for it, and i was supplying less of a flow for her..
this time around, i wont be supplementing at all if i can avoid it..for me it was detrimental to my already low supply

i think this is more of the issue. she is so used to the bottle now. but i have never made enough to satisfy her. in six weeks, i had ONE feeding where she was satisfied (meaning she did not cry or fuss wanting more). I didn't want to supplement, but she was losing so much weight, and she literally needed more food... how could i not? now, i just feel so frustrated because now it's almost like she won't even let me give her the little bit that i can. at this point, i am wondering should i just forget and do the bottle with no breast at all? i am FFing every feeding anyway, but i thought by BFing first, she would at least get a little something from me. it's never enough, but it was something.

no.... maybe I should have, but at this point, i have seen NO changes in my supply with everything i did do and was recommended to me (supplements, the herbal tea, the warm compresses, pumping more often, etc.) Also, both my OB and my ped. said at 6 weeks PP, it's unlikely I will see any changes in my supply.

Maybe you want to give it one more shot with a lactation consultant? I think Ethel gave me the name of someone in Suffolk that accepts insurance.

I know you have worked really really hard for the past 6 weeks. I know how rough it is. Chat Icon It might be worth it to give it one more try with a professional who can actually observe what DD is doing.

YOur OB and Ped and WRONG.......... It's NEVER too late to increase your supply and it actually takes 12 weeks for your supply to fully develop after birth!

WOmen who aren't even PG can induce lactation to BF adopted children....

If you still want to nurse more nad get away from spuuplementing you have to contact a good LC and work with them!!

We saw Dr. Lauren Macaluso in Great Neck. She was great! Very nice and helpful.

http://www.macalusomedical.com/LGP.html

She took insurance, but charged for both me and DD, so it worked out to $40 with my insurance. If you want someone in Suffolk, email Ethel. She had names.

Good luck and keep us posted!
