Breastfeeding classes....

In additon to child birth classes.. Yes or No?

I am already spending a bunch on the childbirth classes.. so do I need the breastfeeding classes? Do they really help?

I read in Newsday that LLL offers free ones? A three part series. Has anyone take them? How are they?

I am glad you asked this question, I was wondering the same thing. You seem to always be one step ahead of me with the classes. Chat Icon

Re: Breastfeeding classes....

I plan to as well at Southside Hospital and I believe they are free too. I know my cousin delivered at Good Sam and took the classes at Southside and found them very helpful. Look into going to another hospital for classes.

Re: Breastfeeding classes....

I just watched the laugh and learn breastfeeding DVD and thought it was informative. At the end of the day, I think it will be hard to practice breastfeeding without the actual baby.

I know they have lactation consultants at the hospital that will help you after the baby is born.

At my BFing class, they encouraged the fathers to attend. DH came with me.

I found the LCs at the hospital to be much more helpful than the class sinply b/c they could actually observe me BFing and help with DS's latch, help me with the position that worked best for us, etc. The class was fine, but I felt like I had already read about most of the information presented at the class. I don't think there's any way to be truly prepared for BFing.

Re: Breastfeeding classes....

BF class IMO is a must for moms and dads.
Your husband should attend. In fact, I had my stepmom attend since she was a bit of a "it doesn't usually work out with BF' person.
They all learned so much. Your DH learns how he can help you be successful at BF. A mom/MIL or whomever learns that BF can and does work for many, many women and that a challenge does not mean you need to go to formula. Those nay-sayers can really hurt your BFing chances.

You learn how to write down the feedings, switch sides, different holds, and most importantly who to call when and if you run into an issue!

Re: Breastfeeding classes....

I took a b/f class and also saw the lactation consultant at the hospital and then one came to my house (because DD was not gaining enough weight at first).

In hindsight, I'm so glad I took the class and had the LC come to the house. The LC at the hospital didn't stay long enough and was too distracted by all the nurses to focus on me and be really helpful.

Oh, and a helpful tip: the LC that came to my house was covered by insurance - the pediatrician wrote a prescription for her that we submitted!

I am going with the consultants in the hospital and then a private LC to come to my home if needed after baby comes home.
