Blinking in toddler

DH and I noticed that occasionally our 2.5 yo DS blinks in a pronounced, noticeable way. it doesn't happen super often so when he does it you're almost like, "am I imagining that or was that actually something?" I've asked him if his eyes hurt but he says no and then I forget about it for a while until the next time it appears to happen.

Should I bring him to an eye doctor? Could it be the start of a tic? it's so subtle but enough that both DH and I brought it up to one another so I'm not sure.

Re: Blinking in toddler

we brought our son last year to a pediatric opthamologist for the same thing. He was 3 1/2 when we took him. It was a 2 hour appointment.

Basically we noticed he sometimes blinks a lot, especially when tired or watching tv. So we wanted to make sure his vision was okay (my husband had glasses at an early age) and that it wasn't a tic or anything.

Basically his vision is completely normal and he said it was probably a nervous tic.

At 4 1/2, he doesn't do it all that much anymore. Chat Icon

We are going through this with our 4 year old now. It started at 3, but now he also has vocal tics. We saw per Opthamologist and waiting to see pedi euro. It's impossible to get an appointment!

my son did it too alot from when he was 2.5 to 3.5. Noticed it when he was tired, nervous or anxious. The last three months he has stopped almost completely. I noticed the more we brought attention to it the more he would do.

My daughter did this on and off at different times. I really think it was just her realizing that she can in fact blink her eyes. Since it happens so infrequently to use we see it as her "discovering" something new. As another poster said, the more we bring attention to it the worse it is. Nevertheless, if it was persistent or affecting how she was functioning I would definitely see a pediatric opthamologist. :)
