Toddler Blinking Eyes Often

My dd is 18m. I have noticed in the past 2 weeks that she has been blinking, almost squinting hard, very often. Not sure what this could be. I was thinking allergies or vision problems. I googled it and saw a bunch of stuff about tics. Just wondering if anyones toddler went through this and what the outcome was. She is not doing it constantly by I am noticing it.

Re: Toddler Blinking Eyes Often

my DS wears glasses because hes farsighted. so my first reaction would be to take her to a pediatric eye doctor to rule out any eye issues. the earlier caught the better.

Both of my older DS's did this about that age and I also thought there was a problem with allergies or eyesight so I talked to my ped about it. Turned out they were doing it for attention because I made a big deal out of it everytime I saw them do it.
Once I ignored the squinting/blinking, it stopped.

I use to do that a lot during my elementery years...dont know why though. I do wear glasses but have nothing incredible wrong with my eyes. I still do it even as an adult. I think sometimes its just a nervous tic kind of thing because its not constant..just once in a while.

I would rule out a vision problem.

My son did it when he was about 2.5 and I read that it was common and to just ignore it. He stopped doing it after a few months.

Re: Toddler Blinking Eyes Often

It might be a stage, she's realizing she can voluntarily blink. But, if it continues for more then a week or two I would make an appointment for an eye exam with an opthamologist (an actual eye doctor) as opposed to an optomotrist who does not do a complete medical eye exam (the people usually working in the glasses places like wise eyes, Davis vision, Cohen's, etc).

I wouldn't be too concerned especially at that age. I would rule out vision issues first as the previous posters mentioned. Have you noticed this only while speaking? Im a speech pathologist and I immediately think of possible precurser to stuttering. Very rare but something to keep in the back of your mind.
