BF moms- sore bleeding nipples
I've been nursing DD for 4 weeks now and my nipples are still really sore, cracked, and bleeding a bit. I have cuts on the sides of my nipples. I use breast shells and try to have them air dry. I also pump a couple times a day to give her a bottle at night. My question is how long until it doesn't hurt anymore and do you have any tips? TIA!

First of all, good job nursing through the pain, it does get better. Try doing saline soaks to heal the cracking. Mix salt and warm water in a small cup, place it over your nipple and let it soak a few minutes. Try to do this a few times a day.
Sounds like you're doing a great job, hang in there and good luck!

Re: BF moms- sore bleeding nipples
the only thing that worked for me were the soothie gel things that Lanisoh makes. They are $10 for a 2 pack but they healed me in like 2-3 days. Saline soaks and the pumping helped some but it was the soothies that did the healing.

It stopped hurting around 6 weeks.
Gel Pads (Lanisoh makes them). You put in the fridge and they feel so soothing on your nipples!
Earth Mama ANgel Baby Nipple Butter- helped me soooo much
Hang in there, mama! It will get better soon!

Re: BF moms- sore bleeding nipples
BFing hurt a lot and I remember 2 months into it, I still had days where it hurt. I found using a nipple shield help "heal" them up when the pain got bad. I'd use it for a few sessions (esp. in the MOTN) here and there, but never long term (they can affect your supply.)
Hang in there. It does get better!

Re: BF moms- sore bleeding nipples
I've only been nursing for a little over two weeks now, my right breast is inverted, so it got sore & started to bleed almost immediately and it was painful. I bought a shield & have been switching using it on and off (just on the right side). It cleared up the bleeding and cracking rather quickly. I use the medela cream after every feed and I too have the gel pads but I'm a leaking mess and find them not to be effective when I need a pad catching my milk! (medela sells gel pads too, cheaper and you get more)

Re: BF moms- sore bleeding nipples
After three kids now..a lactation nurse told me in the hospital just last week to soak gauze pads in saline and put them in a breast pad inside a bra...bec I was starting to scab up on one nip...and leave it there until next feeding...just don't let it dry out..
Wow..the stabbing was gone by the next feeding...and always express a little breast milk on before ...worked like a charm...
Wish I had that advice with baby 1 and baby 2
Good luck - hope it helps!

Some things that should help:
Air them out. Walk around topless if you can.
Rub a little breastmilk on them before/after nursing.
Cool, wet teabags. Very soothing.
Those gel soothies, they really helped with the pain and soreness.
Lanisoh nipple cream, apply liberally after every feeding.
It takes a few weeks but it will get better

ITA with all of these suggestions. Although, I have to add- while some pain and soreness is normal, cuts and bleeding really is not. It sounds to me like your daughter may not have a proper latch, it may not be deep enough. If you are able, I would contact a lactation consultant to come work with you and make sure her latch is correct. HTH and I hope you feel better soon!

Re: BF moms- sore bleeding nipples
Check the latch. With the girls around 6 weeks my nipples were really bad. Once I figured out how to fix their latch the pain stopped immediately (even though they were still cracked) and my nipples healed.
Make sure the bottom of your nipple is in DC mouth. My girls were small and my boobs/nipples are huge so they weren't getting enough of my nipple in their mouth. Before they latched I would squeeze my nipple flat, let them latch, and then let go of my nipple. It helped them get more in their mouth.
I found googling latches helped.
