How do you really feel about wallpaper? Chat Icon

We have so many issues with our walls- paneling that we're afraid to take down (I successfully put wallpaper over paneling in my childhood bedroom) and other such things.

I am not thinking about 70s style velvet or anything like that. Chat Icon

Re: Be honest...

I personally don't like it for myself, I like the ease of just being able to repaint a wall (I feel like thats enough work in itself)--so for that reason, I won't have any in my house......but i have seen some really beautiful things done with wallpaper--so if you want it, then go for it

Re: Be honest...

I HATE HATE HATE HATE Wallpaper.

When we moved into this house, we had to remove three layers of wallpaper and it ruined the walls. So we had to skimcoat the walls to get them back to normal.

Re: Be honest...

I like it. Restoration Hardware just started selling some and it's beautiful. I would love to use it in conjunction with their paints and fabrics; everything would coordinate and look amazing.

Re: Be honest...

Hate it.

DH and I decided that our first project in the new house will be tearing down the funky boarders that they have up in 2 of the bedrooms and both bathrooms.

Re: Be honest...

Honestly, I grew up with wallpaper.

I HATE removing old dated wallpaper but I actually don't mind some wallpaper. I just find paint to be easier to paint over when you are tired of it or need to freshen it up. That's hard with wallpaper.

I also don't find any wallpaper that I like.

I like simple elegant wallpaper with fleur de lis prints, embossments, brocades, damasks etc nothing over the top. I only like it for formal rooms. I dislike most wallpaper borders though. My parents wallpapered every room in my house growing up.

Re: Be honest...

I don't know if you want me to answer this question...

I cannot stand wallpaper. I just spend this entire week taking down the wallpaper in our office. It was a pain because the previous owners didn't prime before putting it up.

We also had to take down a border of wallpaper in our bedroom and we still have to take down wallpaper in the kitchen and hallway and bathroom.

I just personally feel like paint looks so much nicer. Chat Icon

I like to change the look of my walls too often so wallpaper would never work in my house. I just feel once you put it up, it's too much work to change it so your stuck with it.

Re: Be honest...

I hate wallpaper mainly because I had to take so much down in my house. If you decide to do it, my advice would be to make sure you love it (so you will have it a while) and have it put up properly to facilitate any future removal.

not a fan of wallpaper at all... i personally think faux finishes add much more class if you can swing it ... or just a rich solid coat of paint

Re: Be honest...

I am surprised that so many people hate Wallpaper!!! Wallpaper is tres chic here, the really popular look is to do a bold patterned wallpaper on your feature wall and paint the rest of the room a contrasting color. If your walls are in bad shape you can line your walls with plain wallpaper and paint over that. All the walls in our house are lined and painted.

I think a lot of people don't like it because clean painted walls are the trend right now.

This is the kind of look I mean....it reallytakes guts! But several of my friends have this kind of look in their living rooms! Its really beautiful!

Re: Be honest...

After the nightmare of trying to take down wallpaper in our kitchen that hadn't been prepped right and having to hire professionals to do it in the end, I'll never use wall paper.

We painted over paneling in 2 rooms. You have to use an oil based primer and get a roller that has a heavy nap so that it covers well. You will also have to use a brush to cut into the grooves in the paneling.

Re: Be honest...

I like wallpaper in certain situations. I like texured high end papers like grass cloth, but in very small doses. Alot of the hamptons houses my DH works in get wallpapered, some of it is beautiful & really takes the room to the next level. However people spending 9 million dollars on a summer house don't really need to consider how hard it will be to remove when they are tired of itChat Icon
I think neutral colors are best, so it will go with alot of things.
I'm generally not a fan of borders but I did use one of my very frilly guest room & I love it.
If your walls are a mess already, new sheetrock might be your only option anyway, so wallpaper it now & when you are ready for a change you can re-sheetrock.
