Baby's first sleepover
How old was DC when you first allowed them to sleep over at a relatives house? I have a close relative that keeps asking for the baby to sleep over. I can't imagine why she would want to wake up all night with a crying baby. I don't know what to say when she asks. I've kinda brushed it off so many times that I feel like it's getting awkward every time it happens. Has anyone else had to deal with something like this?

Baby's first sleepover
We were going to have our 5 month old son stay with my mom at my grandfather's house, but she ended up staying at our house instead... we were away for 3 nights. She had a wonderful time, and he did too, but she was exhausted. How old is your DC?
ETA: DS has STTN since about 3.5 months (8-10 hours).

Baby's first sleepover
2 months. We had plans with friends on a Friday night and a wedding early Saturday so DD stayed at my moms.

Baby's first sleepover
Unless it was a grandparent babysitting I can't understand why someone would want a baby to sleepover unless it was to play house. In which case I wouldn't want anyone to do with my baby.
Toddler...different story cause at least they can interact and make memories with their relative.
I would kindly tell them no sleepovers until baby is older that you wouldn't sleep right knowing your baby wasn't in the house.
ETA- if you needed the babysitter obviously that's different but just for a sleepover with a baby..ehh

Baby's first sleepover
My girls are 3 years and 6 months and they've never slept at a relatives without us. I'm not ready and don't really feel like I need to give anyone an explanation. They drop hints and talk about"someday" but I just feel like even at 3 dd is still a baby. When she's older it will be fine but I'm not sure what age that will be. I would just ignore the requestsfor now if you dont feel comfortable.

Re: Baby's first sleepover
Thanks for the replies. DC is about 8 months. Only wakes up once or twice a night and goes back to sleep after a snack. I am still nursing though so pumping extra times is just more work then I would like. Maybe if there was a wedding or a party we had to be at, I would feel differently but, I can't see it happening any time soon. We also live about 45 mins away from this relative so it wouldn't be convenient at all.

we went away for a few nights when my DD was 7 months and my parents watched her. but they offered so we could go away and have a break.
is your relative asking bc they want to help out and give you a break?
if you don't want to then just say you don't want to be away from your LO just yet, but thanks anyway.

I keep saying "oh, maybe soon... i don't know" and then change the subject but honestly, unless there is a reason for it... I am not comfortable with just a casual sleep over. I feel more and more put on the spot though every time she asks.

Re: Baby's first sleepover
Dd has been sleeping at my sisters since 6 months old. She's 2 1/2 now. She loves it. So do we because we can go out and not worry. Dd can sleep anywhere and I feel like it's because she's been sleeping at my sisters/parents since early on.

I'm not sure why she's asking. I don't complain about anything in front of her so I am pretty sure it isn't because she thinks I need a break. It's a close aunt of DH's but she's like a mother to DH so she's kind of like a grandparent. All of her kids are grown and married but no kids yet.

Re: Baby's first sleepover
She is probably trying to be helpful and let you get a good night of sleep!
DD1 had her first sleepover at 4 months when we had a wedding to go to. My twins also had their first sleepover around the same age. I nursed all the babies and I sent them with pumped milk.
Eta my oldest is almost 4 and my twins are 7 months and they regularly have sleepovers at my parents. My daughter is perfectly comfortable with my parents, their house is like a second home to her.

Baby's first sleepover
The only time she's ever slept out of our house away from us is when I was having my second child!! Otherwise my mom has slept over two times when we were at out-of-town weddings. She was 2 and 2.5.

This is my thinking exactly. I would find the request really strange and presumptuous from anyone and overbearing from even a grandparent. Neither of our parents even asked to keep our kids overnight as an infant. That said, I did have my parents watch DD at 6 months overnight for a wedding but that was at my request.
I wouldn't want someone just taking my baby to play for the night.

Re: Baby's first sleepover
I would have whenever
I see nothing wrong with a relative/good friend etc watching them for a night out/wedding or just for a good nights sleep
We have never had a date night and my kids are 2 and a half bc we don't have sitters
If we did I would take them up on a offer for a nights sleep

Re: Baby's first sleepover
I wouldn't allow unless I needed someone to watch overnight or they are old enough (like 4) and its like a fun sleepover. But just a grandparent. Mil asked a few times before my girls were 1 and I was like back off lady you aren't playing house with my kids. I know they wouldn't sleep well at all and I'd have to pick them up or she wouldn't tell me they were upset and they would be tortured. They need to be old enough to agree to stay and know if they wake up I won't be there and can't pick them up. As infants it wouldn't have worked at all.

Sounds like she wants to play house. Tell her no and to stop asking and you will let her know if snd when it's ok. I had to bluntly tell MIL to stop asking.

Completely agree. I take people up on any offer I get, DS is 3 and still doesnt sleep through the night.
The first time he spent the night at my parents was when he was 5 months.

Baby's first sleepover
You have to do what you're comfortable with. Be firm with your response to the relative. It would annoy me too that she's constantly asking. My Dd is almost 4 and she hasn't had a sleepover yet, but we also haven't needed her to. However my MIL asked if we would send DD to spend a week at her house over the summer and I said no. She lives almost 5 hours away! I'm not ready for that yet. I'm not even sure DD would be able to spend more than a night or two away from us either.

Re: Baby's first sleepover
DS is almost 9 months and has only slept at my moms a few times. Once was because we had a wedding to go to and another time because DH had the flu and I didn't want the baby getting sick. My mom watches DS when I am at work so I feel comfortable leaving him with her.

We went away for one night last year when DS was 19 months, although MIL came to our house and slept over since it was easier that way, all his stuff was at our house.
