Baby food at 4 months? Is it really a bad idea?
I started cereal with my first son around 3 months because the formula wasnt enough for him...i had him eat it a couple hours before bed and he would sleep thru the night and went from there. My Ped was fine with it since he met the guidelines of holding his head up, the weight and what not.
He is by far not obese at all

I started cereal and Stage 1 baby foods with my DD at 4 months.......she had zero issues with it. Looooved everything, chewed well, etc. She was ready for many reasons though.
Same with my DS. And he is 5 now, no food allergies, and he is tall and thin.

I started orange veggies at 6mos - yams, sweet potato, butternut squash, carrots. Also avocado and bananas.
I decided to start at 6months based on the research I did and after discussions with dr. Dd is breast fed as well.

Re: Baby food at 4 months? Is it really a bad idea?
I just saw a story on the news recently again about this, that's 6 mths is best. I waited until 6 mths and see no need to rush. I strongly believen in waiting until 6 mths personally. My DD is 4+, slim (was a very hungry and heavy baby) and zero allergies. Also was FF only. Only you can decide.

Re: Baby food at 4 months? Is it really a bad idea?
We started food just shy of 6 months bc we figured it was time but honestly looking back I would have waited even longer. DD was happy as anything with her BM and always seemed content and satsified. She never showed signs of "wanting" food. Starting foods was a stressful nightmare. She absolutely hated it. For future children I plan on letting them lead the way more to show when they are ready.

I have to agree with this. I tried at 6 months when my ped told me I could. DD hated everything I tried. It was a nightmare every time I gave her solids. At 9 months she randomly ate almost a whole stage 1 squash and I was thrilled. She still really hates most baby food at almost 13 months. I can get her to eat the fruits sometimes and she loves yogurt. Other than that she still makes faces with most baby foods. She does much better with table food. I wish I hadn't stressed so much over it and realized that she'd eat when she was ready.

Re: Baby food at 4 months? Is it really a bad idea?
I fed all 3 of my kids cereal at 3 months. My ped said it was fine to start at 4 months, but when I told her I had already started, she wasn't concerned. They were def ready to eat. I never was crazy about rules, I went by instinct & what I thought my kids needed.

Re: Baby food at 4 months? Is it really a bad idea?
I started DS #1 at 5-6 months with cereal, then went to veggies & fruits. With DS#2, I waited until 7 months and skipped the cereal.
My ped, just as most of them out there, told me to start at 4 months but I figured there was no rush so I waited.

Baby food at 4 months? Is it really a bad idea?
According to my ped, rice cereal at 4 months and once they get the hang of that any of the stage 1 foods were okay, but breastfed babies shouldn't start until 6 months...

This!!! My DS was ready and happy with trying new things at 4 months. If he wasn't I would have stopped and tried again later.
Now at 16 months he is skinny and eats everything we give him. I think the studies are BS.
Feed when you and your LO are ready.

Re: Baby food at 4 months? Is it really a bad idea?
We just started at 6 months and are taking it slow. It was a personal decision but DD was not holding her head up that well yet and I read so much about their guts not being sealed until 6 mos.

Re: Baby food at 4 months? Is it really a bad idea?
I don't think there is a magic number when it comes to feeding babies. I think physical readiness is what you should go by and for most babies that is somewhere between 4 and 6 months. Personally, I would not start with rice cereal since it is a processed food and could be irritating to an immature gut. I would start with veggies and fruits. Good luck!

The studies are linking it to obesity/digestive issues later in life. So not at age 3...more like age 30. Even if the studies are BS it wasn't a big deal IMO to wait 2 more months. My DD didn't know the difference anyway.
And if course it won't affect everyone...nothing does. But I felt it made more sense to wait.

Re: Baby food at 4 months? Is it really a bad idea?
I just don't understand the rush, feeding baby food is such a PITA We waited until 6 months per Ped's recommendation. DD was certainly ready before then, loved watching us eat food, could sit up fine, etc. but that didn't make me want to rush to put a spoon in her mouth. if she was extra hungry she got more BM or formula.
Like now, at 2.5, she's ready for a lollipop all the time but she only gets them on holidays

I started ds on oatmeal and veggies at 3 months. He loved his food, colic and constipation issues disappeared instantly. He has no food allergies and is very lean and tall. Something told me BM / form just wasn't enough for him. My baby book says I started cereal at 2 months.

I just have to say, obesity has to do with genetics and diet. According to the study , my kids will be obese. No one in our family is even overweight, it's in the genes. I am 100%!confident my kids will never be obese

I agree! My mom said I started cereal at two months, and I was a big, always hungry infant.
I was a skinny child and at 40( and having two kids), I am still thin.
My son's pediatrician said the number 1 indicator that his patients will be overweight is if the parents are. Of course, that is not always the case, but I think that it is more habits and genetics than how they ate as infants.

Re: Baby food at 4 months? Is it really a bad idea?
Honestly, I think it really depends on the baby. With my first, I knew he was ready for something else rather than just BM and formula. With my second, he was content with being EBF so I held off with solids until 6.5 months. Its a personal preference, yes, but I also think it depends on the baby's needs.

Re: Baby food at 4 months? Is it really a bad idea?
I don't know that it's a "bad" idea. We started around 6 months, she wasn't feeling it, so we tried again around 7- 7.5.
Started with oatmeal, then I think we did bananas and orange veggies.

My LO just turned 4 months, but I am holding off until approx 6 months before I begin with "solids". I am interested in starting with veggies and fruits first. Do you have a timeline or a guide that you follow?
With my first I started with cereal and had no problems, but now I am trying to be more conscious of processed foods.
