awkward situation- wedding gift related
so here's the situation:
my old co-worker/friend got married in September. I rsvp'd no because I was super pregnant at the time so I knew I wouldn't want to go. I bought a card and intended on sending a check, but apparently pregnancy brain got the best of me and I never sent it. I only realized this when I came across the blank card last week.
So I sent a text to my friend saying how embarrassed I was and I asked him for their address to send the gift. I also asked how him and his DW were doing. he just responded back, "that's ok! send it here..."
the address was to a town that he grew up in and not the town they lived, which I thought was weird but I wasn't about to ask any questions.
today another mutual friend tells me that they got separated 2 months after the wedding.
I feel horrible for them and whatever they're going through, but part of me finds it weird that he'd still tell me to send the card.
I'm chalking it up to him being embarrassed and not knowing what to say, but I'm dying to see if he cashes my check. lol
I'm not complaining or judging or anything, just thought I'd share this awkward situation and see what everyone thought

You tried to do the right thing, but I probably would have continued baby brain and not sent it, I don't think they'd remember their whole life who sent what.

I know!! now I wish I just let it go, but I just felt like the next time I saw them I'd be thinking about how we didn't send them a gift. lol

oh I agree! but I feel bad for him too. if he cashes the check that would be ballsy, but either way I don't care at this point.

You're going to think this is a weird question, but- is your friend SURE they separated? I only ask because one of my best friends, who I love to pieces frequently has her facts wrong. She has told me people have gotten married, broken up, moved, had babies, DIED (yes, died) and she only has about a 50% success rate. She doesn't do it on purpose, she just can't keep names straight or stories straight.
Assuming your friend's brain is better wired than my friend's, no way in hell would I send that check!

I think it's a rotten thing that he wasn't upfront to you about his situation but asked that you send the wedding gift anyway to the address where he grew up. I don't think he was caught off-guard or felt bad or embarrassed because you said you texted him. He had plenty of time to think his response through before texting back, he even told you to send it to his childhood home. It's not like you called him up and he was caught off guard and put on the spot or he was embarrassed. Regardless, he should've been honest about the situation and thanked you for the thought. You even asked about his wife and he clearly avoided the question. I'm glad he was finally honest, although I'm inclined to believe it wasn't because he had the best of intentions or a bout of remorse. Maybe he was trying to put the money towards his divorce expenses lol.
Is it possible he said he can't cash it because you wrote the check out to him AND his wife and he's referring to the technicality of not being able to cash it? lol
