I never really got why people keep it a secret. If people don't like the name who cares. I rather them deal with it now then when the baby is born.

For me, I find it to be private. It's not entirely the fact that I don't want to hear comments, suggestions, etc from the peanut gallery. That's part of it, but not all of it.

It's more than that though for me. I can't explain it easily, and it may sound weird, but I just find the name private for some reason, just for me and DH to say "baby XYZ" we can't wait for you to come.

This baby is our blessing and everyone else will meet the child and know all about the child once he/she is here. But for the next 5 mths, baby is all ours.

I am sure I am the odd man out on this, it's just the way I feel. I am still not fully explaining it, it's just a feeling in my gut.

i think that if someone had a negative comment to make about the name, they would be less inclined to voice that opinion once the baby was there and named already Chat Icon at least i would hope so! Chat Icon

I wanted honest feed back.. I wanted that knee jerk reaction that strangers so often give in brutal honesty..

So yes, i shared her name

Jezebel Rose

I always loved the name Jezebel - the way it sounds

So I *tested* the field. So far over 80% of the people I've told (strangers, family, etc) don't even KNOW the story of Jezebel and just love the name. It really helped with my decision.

I did have an alternative if the majority of the world really wasn't ready for a Jezebel. But frankly I think FINALLY old fashioned wives tales and twisting of the bibles words have faded. Chat Icon

I also love the name Jezebel.... for the record, she was NOT a 'lady of the evening'... rather she was a prominent and strong-willed phoenecian princess... It's just that the phoenecians and israelites didn't get along too well in old-testament days, so the Jewish historical record was overtly unflattering and biased.

Re: Are you telling people the names you chose?

we only shared it with my family in germany... frankly becuase we only have a polish 1st name, and needed help with an old-school german middle name...

our initial choice for a middle name was shot down by them ASAP. we're still working on another one Chat Icon

I recall being at my friend's shower and casually discussing names well before we settled on a first name... and everyone was very negative about our first draft choices...

I think of it this way.... secretly, I don't particularly care for most of their childrens' names either.... I'm just more polite about it and keep it to myself Chat Icon

Nope!!! DH and I were originally not going to find out the sex of the baby but then we decided to find out last minute. So, we decided not to tell our friends/family the baby's name, just for fun. Some friends know, but NONE of our family knows. It's been fun having them try to guess...although my MIL isn't happy that we won't tell her (she always has something to be upset about).

Re: Are you telling people the names you chose?

not this time around. i had foolishly announced the girl name i had wanted to name my dd (wasn't pregnant at the time), and SIL ended up using the name, as she became pregnant with a Chat Icon before me. it's still a sore spot, because i love that name. i'd never use it, even as a middle name, and now i've fallen in love with another girl name... not letting this one get away!

You're not the only one- I felt the same exact way. In addition to the fact that it would hurt me if someone I loved trashed the name or didn't get excited about it before the birth. I wish I could say that "I don't care what people think," but it would hurt me. After the baby is born, no one would dare to trash the name.
