anyone have a kid that eats A TON!?!?!? I mean A LOT!

my son is 13 months old and i'm starting to wonder if something is wrong. Chat Icon He eats a ton!!!!

For breakfast, he can eat 3 muffin tops (4 pieces per 1 muffin top) or 3 frozen pancakes.

For lunch once he ate 3 hotdogs, a yogurt and some fruit. Chat Icon

He can eat a whole slice of pizza himself.

When we go out to restaurants, we have to order his own meal because he finishes it all (kids size) and then we end up giving him some of ours.

My 1st was a good eater. Picky, but good eater. But NEVER like THIS.

he also had bad reflux and has been off of meds since 8 months. But my ped thinks his reflux is still bothering him.

He's only in the 6th percentile for weight.

Is this at all normal for a 13 month to eat this much????

I would try to give him something more filling for breakfast, like oatmeal and a hard boiled egg. Scrambled egg and cheese, whole grain waffle w peanut butter etc. carbs are not filling enough.

I just wonder how he could eat a whole slice of pizza , 3 hot dogs and only be in 6%? I def think you should mention to PED

My DS is 14 months and had 10 silver dollar size pancakes this morning. He is less tha 5th percentile for weight so I am not worried.

My son eats a lot too, much more than my daughter did. I just figured it's because he's just bigger and more active. She was more vocal. My guys around 75% for weight and over 90% for height. DD was always 50%.

Re: anyone have a kid that eats A TON!?!?!? I mean A LOT!

My DS (5.5 now) definitely eats alot. He has since he was a toddler. He basically eats like an adult - he eats very healthy tons of fruits, veggies and protein...He is slim and average build definitely not heavy and tall for his age - he has always been 50% percentile for weight and 75-100 for height.

That said, he has some weeks where he eats a ton and some days where he doesn't eat nearly as much...

But, overall, I wouldn't be worried...My DS can pack in 3 slices of pizza Chat Icon

My DS was eating a lot around that age too. Not quite that much, but a lot. He has since slowed down. And now he frequently eats almost nothing at meals. Maybe he's just going through a growth spurt? It couldn't hurt to ask the ped though, just in case.

oh no he's been like this for months. At 6 months he was eating 4 containers of baby food at each feeding. He's like an eating machine. Chat Icon

and he's an angry eater which makes it even worse. Chat Icon He grunts. shouts. yells.

We have become closet eaters because if he sees food... he grunts, yells and shouts until he gets some.

today we travelled from FL to home. He had 3 pancakes in the morning. A yogurt too. Then at the airport he ate a whole bagel with cream cheese. Then on the plane he had a pb&j sandwich. Then when we were home he had tons of blueberries, a yogurt and a whole slice of pizza.

This is mostly all carbs and sugar, so what I would do is focus more on protein and see if that helps. It could be a blood sugar issue. He is starving, eating mostly carbs, the blood sugar gets out of whack, and he is starving again quickly. I would probably bring it up to the doctor for peace of mind!

My daughter was/is the same way. She is only 50% for height and weight at this point. She can eat the portion sizes of an adult and is only 2. I was the same as a child. I was always tiny as well. he's fine!

I understand what you're saying but i'm just giving examples as to quantity. He gets plenty of chicken, beef, turkey, ham, etc etc on a daily basis. Except yesterday when we flew and were in and out of airports.

I occassionaly make him eggs in the morning but i work FT and can't always do so. So fruit and pancakes/muffins he normally gets.

My son is like that also. He's fine just growing. As long as it's balanced I don't worry. I also try to make sure I have some good protein and fiber in his diet. He was always a huge eater and my ped isn't concerned. There have been times I have cut him off though and made him wait an hour for a snack. I will say that he does know when he is full though and will stop at that point. Here's an example of a day's worth a meals at 15 months

9am- milk, greek yogurt, a whole banana, and 1 hard boiled egg. Eats everything and it's all adult sizes
11am- whole granny smith apple and toast with peanut butter
1pm- milk, 2 hotdogs, 10 veggie straws, and 1 pack of string cheese
3pm- hummus with naan and cucumber and shredded carrots to chew and dip
5:30pm- milk, and whatever we have for dinner. Tonight it was a whole slice of pizza and some breadstick!
7:30- 2 oreo cookies with milk and his sister before bed.

I am sure he is fine, it's not like he is overweight or anything. If you are starting to worry, just ask his dr.

3 hot dogs? That is insane..I would have just given him 1..I know grown men who can't down 3 hot dogs without feeling ill! Chat Icon

that's EXACTLY my point!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon If you stop at 1... he screams, grunts, yells until you give him more. the amount of food he eats is an insane amount for a 1 year old. Even a lot for a grown adult.

Then if you're starting to worry..give him 1 hot dog, when he freaks (I have one who screams and grunts for food, so I gotcha on that one) throw some cucumbers, or tomatoes, or anything he can nibble on, so that you don't feel like you are giving him too much?

How are his stools? Do you see a lot of undigested food in them? My son eats a crazy amount of food because he has a problem with digestion (food allergies and other issues), so he's not getting all the nutrients from food like he would if his body broke down the food properly.

Okay well I would bring it up to the ped if you are truly concerned. Excessive hunger can be a sign of diabetes just so you know. I know a child that is diabetic, was very thin and ate like a horse. He wasn't diagnosed until later in childhood though.

Re: anyone have a kid that eats A TON!?!?!? I mean A LOT!

My 2.5 year old has always ate a ton starting around 7 months. He's a bigger boy but I don't deprive him bc he will eat a well rounded diet. If I let him, he would rat all day long. I had mentioned it to my ped bc my now 3.5 yr old was never a big eater. Ped told me as long as he's eating meals & snacks to not worry. Hrs growing.

Thanks! Diabetes does run in my husbands family so i'll definitely mention it. Maybe when we have the lead blood test done she can run a few more.

anyone have a kid that eats A TON!?!?!? I mean A LOT!

My son is 3.5 and he has been eating a ton since he was little...he is 95% in height and 75% in weight...he is a skinny little nothing but can out each some adults i know. My dad calls him the machine cause he eats all day but its usually good stuff he is a huge fruit kid so i cant complain.

As long as they arent overweight my doctor told me not to worry about it, they did test him for diabetes early on cause it very prominate on both sides of our family. There are some days he eats like a bird and other days he eats more than my husband.

Sounds normal to be eating more at that age with walking etc. But I would focus on quality over quantity. Sounds like he could be missing a nutrient that his little body just needs. Between vitamins and good food I think he will level out. My LO eats lots but we always do lots of veg and fruit. I'd mention it to the ped. It's likely a spurt, but 3 hot dogs is a bit much. He will shoot up soon.
