Re: Am I wrong? Nanny related
I agree with others , I do think she should have July 5th off.
Also were personal days ever discussed?
Most families will give nannies 2-3 paid weeks off a year, plus holidays and plus few (4-5) paid personal days off. If a nanny ends up taking any extra time off (on top of listed above) then they work another day OR take an unpaid day off. Some families are more flexible and generous than others and will pay for any extra days off anyway .... Going forward if your nanny needs an extra day off and she can't work a weekend instead , then just tell her you can't pay her for any extra time off and that's all. P.S. I forgot few sick days (I always got 5) above

Re: Am I wrong? Nanny related
I guess it does work out to 2-3 week of paid vacation but I really can only give that when I take off. I use my vacay days to go on vacation so I can't use up any other days.
Sick days - whenver she's sick but she lives in with us so he hasn't taken a sick day I think almost ever - I mean it would be wierd for her too since she is always here, but I would of course be okay if she had to.
And for personal days we never gave a specific number - that might have been our problem. But it's only the end of June and she's probably taken at least 5.
So yes, going forward we'll have to tell her she won't be paid for any others. Why do I feel so bad though? She certainly doesn't and gives me plenty of attitude all ofthe time.
And yes, I DEF do need to find someone new!

You are not wrong.
You had an ongoing arrangement with her so she knew the deal.
I would give her July 5th off and make it clear that any future personal days will be unpaid.
Then for next year, if you decide to keep her, set aside a fair number of sick/personal days that are paid, and let her know that anything beyond those will be unpaid or she has to make it up another day.

I think you should give her July 5th off. It is a national holiday.
In the future, if she takes a day off, I would dock her or let her make up the day.

Re: Am I wrong? Nanny related
I think most families make a mistake of not printing out/writing down all the days off for a nanny when interviewing/hiring. It is very important to do so, this way there is no misunderstanding down the road.

ITA. Everyone is off July 5th. I think she should have off AND be paid! It's a bank holiday! Next personal day, don't pay her. I don't think it should be "mandatory" she makes it up on the weekend. Just doesn't seem fair.

It's not mandatory but we suggested that as she is paid for every single personal day she takes off. And like I said, not a drs appt - a day that she just wants to leave for vacay early. And when I say made up, it's almost july and she has worked 1 and 1/2 weekend days so i'm not a slave driver! lol!

Re: Am I wrong? Nanny related
I think you are right on all accounts.
I actually don't think she needs to have off on the 5th.
I wasn't a nanny, but my employer gave us the following days off: New Years Day Memorial Day July 4th Labor Day Thanksgiving Day Christmas Day
Now if the 4th fell on a Thursday or Tuesday we were given the choice as our floating holiday to take that friday or monday off OR the day after Thanksgiving but we couldn't take both.
I thought this was pretty fair.
If she is starting to ask for more time off then instead of docking her pay, I would dock her vacation days.
It actually seems to me that she may be looking for another job. If she has taken that many days off within the last few months and has asked for more time off.

She might be. I thought she was at one point, but I think she sees how hard it is to find a nanny job when you don't drive, which keeps her with us. And generally we are very lenient. I mean I come downstairs and she's with the kids and she's on the phone. Or I don't hassle her when she's watching soaps instead of cleaning if both kids are sleeping. and I try to always have one kid with me when I work from home so she doesn't have to deal with both. So she has it pretty good in some ways. But I think the driving thing is the main thing that prevents her from getting another job.

Hold up......phone, soaps??? I am VERY close with our nanny and she is so apologetic if I ever "catch" her on the phone. She has 2 kids of her own, so I do understand that she needs to be able to receive phone calls, but long calls never happen. And soaps would certainly not happen. Our nanny has never once sat down during the day. If Maddie is sleeping or playing, she will take that time to do some laundry or clean up the house, but she's one in a million. It does sound like you should try someone else on a trial basis. Good luck!!!
