Am I terrible mother if... (LOL)

I bought my 19 month old dd that harness 'leash' type of thing LOL Its a rabbit and its tail is the leash... I mean when Im out with dd shes the type to just start walking around and when Im alone with her I like the idea that I can keep her safe while allowing her some leadway to roam... especially for when we go on vaca or something...

Am I terrible? Pre kids I used to think they were strange but now with a child... I TOTALLY GET IT! LOL

If I had a "runner" or a "wanderer," I would totally leash them too. Luckily both my kids have always been really good about that.

You're never a terrible mother if your goal is to keep your child safe. Who cares what other people think.

I don't know. I'm torn.
I cringe when I see them and I cringe when think about using one on DD.
However, I know how important it is to have peace of mind and know your child is safe and happy. and if you will actually be going somewhere crowded, it makes sense.
So if she doesn't mind wearing it, go for it.
It doesn't matter what other people might think. You need to do what works for you.
And while the whole bunny theme does sound cute, let's face it. You're just dressing up a leash, it's still the same thing and the costume isn't going to hide it.
But you will NOT be a terrible mom.

I don't like them and couldn't see myself using one. Fortunately, my DS wasn't a wanderer.

Now my cousin also didn't like them but her 2nd child a boy used to run and had no fear. She ended up getting one when he was little because they were going to an amusement park. She hated it but safety trumped all. Ofcourse needless to say the little Houdini managed to get out of it in 1 min. And this was an expensive one.

Although I am not a fan, I don't think you or any mom is terrible to use one. To be honest anyone who thinks a mom concerned for a child's safety is terrible, is the ridiculous person.

If you feel you need it, get it. My friend bought one for me before DS was even born. He is a runner for sure. I haven't actually used it but there have been a few times where we were out somewhere and I wished I had.

Re: Am I terrible mother if... (LOL)

Not at all! You're keeping her safe from running. Heck, I had one for my 2 yr old DS when we went to Disney. He is a wanderer. He was not the only one wearing it too. I got DS a monkey backpack. After a while he asked to put it on when he wanted to get out of the stroller bc he knew it was the only way to walk around freely (sort of Chat Icon )

Anyway, do what makes you feel safe. Yes, I used to make fun of those parents before kids too. Heck, before I had kids I was the perfect parent who was going to have the perfect kids. I was wrong. LOL! My kids are good, but they are not perfect in public all the time or at home. Chat Icon Chat Icon

You have to do what you feel is best for your child.

Me personally - I would only use in places like Disney crowds. I feel like my DS needs to learn very early on that he needs to stay with mommy. He is the kinda kid that if I don't do it now he will never stay close

I have 3.. used one only for a little while on one trip only (so just once, what a waste of money on all those right?). She likes them cause they are like backpacks (which is what I used as a diaper bag so she was like mama).

Never thought anything negative about them so never understood why people say never blah blah. its not them that's the problem its the moms who literally use it like a leash and stop watching their children because they are on one, or (yes I've seen it) they tie it to an object LOL

But your kid, your choice. Its always entertaining to see how perceptions change once its YOUR kid you're dealing with!

I am not a mom yet but I think they are good for kids that run off or even kids that do not when in a crowed place like a theme park. It is better to keep you child safe! I recently watched my neighbors daughter run into the street and half way up the road before they were able to grab her-- she was so fast! Thankfully, we live on a quiet street but I can only imagine how scary that could be in a crowed area.

It is a lot less restrictive then strapping a kid in a stroller. I see no problem with it.

I see no problem with the harnesses. I had one for my oldest who was a runner. I don't care what anyone thinks I'm protecting my child and who ever doesn't like it doesn't have to look!

I think they're a great idea to keep the child safe & I will probably need to use one with DS. My mom used it with me as a little kid so I wouldn't run & it didn't damage me in any way... I think it's fine!!!!

I was just talking about this with someone. Pre=kids, I think we judge them. Post-kids, you do what you have to do to keep your kids safe. Some kids run.

Absolutely not. I might think twice if your gut told you it was necessary and you didn't use it because you were worried about being judged.

I used to shake my head at mothers with their child on leashes until I had a "runner" Lemme tell ya nothing is scarier than seeing your 23 month old son just take off from you in a crowded place.

If you feel safer with her in it, then get it!
