I would HOPE that the children are being supervised ALL hours of the trip, in a foreign country, being that they are in high school.
I wouldn't even let my child go on a trip like this in high school, and I certainly don't agree with drinking while on a school trip.
Really? You wouldn't give you kid this opportunity if it was something you could provide? I went away twice in HS and it was awesome--it eventually led me to what I wanted to do as an adult. Sure, I was a good kid, which is why my parents made the decision to let me go.
My parents also signed the permission slip back then. I remember having several drinks but nothing insane. I guess a parent has to make the decision on a case-by-case basis.
Though we were supervised MOST of the time there were def. opportunities to "get away". We still didn't go nuts...

I think they are going to drink if they want to drink. Raise a kid with good judgement and values. That's the best defense in this situation.
totally agree.
I went away when I was 19 and drinking age was 18. Did I have a few drinks? Yes. did I get drunk? No.
But then again my parents never really drank, so I never saw the appeal to it. Until I was older.

No, I wouldn't.. I realize I'm probably not the norm. Especially after seeing the parade of buses for my son's HS senior trip today at pick up. They are going to Europe he said. My son has special needs, so he won't be going as a senior anyway since I'm sure his 1:1 wouldn't be going with him. My daughter has many years to go, but I can say with certainty that she will not leave the country on a school trip. I guess you could say the Natalee Holloway story influences that decision. Too many things can happen in a foreign country with minimal supervision.

We went to Quebec on our Senior Trip. No permission slip, plenty of drinking.

Yeah me too but I can't say for sure my parents would have signed the consent and they were pretty lax..then again I went to Catholic HS  They did send me away to college at 17 though so really what is the difference?
Honestly at 17 I am sure my son and his friends will be experimenting with drinking I wouldn't not send him on a chaperoned trip bc of this, it isn't like they are allowing them to go to discotechs all night

I went to Germany when I was 16, I don't remember if my parents had to sign a slip. But you can be well rest assured that I was drinking plenty in my own town without their permission at 16!
It was honestly the trip of a lifetime and I hope my DD gets the opportunity to go on a trip like that as well.

I went to Montreal on a school trip when I was 16. I dont remember any forms my mom signed for such but I know we went to a little pub and had a beer when we were there....the chaperones knew but just kinda looked the other way. We only had a short time one night to actually do this....

I went to Hawaii on a class trip when I was 17. Obviously it's still the US, so drinking age was 21, but we had no problem getting alcohol. We all drank our faces off. It is impossible to be under 24/7 supervision when it's a big trip like that and naive to think that the students will never have a minute to themselves. Unless there is a chaperone assigned to every students side, it's just not going to happen. I'm so grateful I was allowed to go on that trip, it was really a once in a lifetime experience.

I went to Spain and Portugal when I was 16. We had permissions slips to have sangria at one of the dinners. We were told that if we drank unsupervised, we would be sent home.

Seriously. I didn't need a trip to drink. I did plenty of it on a fri or sat night. I think I turned out fine.

I guess no one on here has teenagers.
As a Mom of a 17 year old, there is plenty of drinking going on Fri & Sat right here in NY without a passport or stepping a foot near JFK.
My son is pretty responsible, he has proven to us plenty of times he can handle himself. I would sign the permission slip & let him use his own judgement.
