Allowing 17 year olds to drink on a school trip to Germany??
Someone I know said their girlfriend's cousins are going to Germany on a school field trip (somewhere on LI, not sure exactly what school yet) and they're 17. Since the legal drinking age is 16 there, the school sent home permission slips for the parents if they want to allow their kids to drink.
First off - nice field trip!  But really, has anyone ever heard of this? Are the trip chaperones really supposed to be responsible for drunk 17 year olds?

Yes, my parents signed mine when i was in HS... we went to Spain, France and Italy. I was 16.

I went to Greece in 96 and we were allowed to drink.

I would think that the school is covering their butts. If it's legal in that country then they can do whatever they want anyway. If my child was there and something happened because they were drinking that would be on me. I gave my premission because I think my child is responsible enough. If I don't give permission and he gets drunk and something happens, then that's on the school because I didn't say it was ok.

I am shocked actually. When I was in HS there was a school trip during spring break to Greece. One of my friends who had family in Greece and we were (her friends were) able to spend the day with her family. There was so much alcohol involved I am shocked that we didn't get caught. And if we had been caught we would have been thrown out of school!

Damn, when I went to Italy we were told that we still had to follow US laws... something sounds a little suspicious with this permission slip. and like NervousNell said, the liability would be immense.

It would be a shame to go to Germany and not try one of the things they are most famous for... However, it's of course a slippery slope. Will they really just TRY things or is it going to escalade into drinking orgy?
I would say it depends on a child. Only the parents know if they can trust their kid in this situation.
Also, and I am just thinking out loud here: if these kids will be of legal drinking age in the country they are visiting, who exactly is going to stop them from buying alcohol with or without the permission slip unless each and everyone of them is going to be supervised at all hours of the trip?

My folks had to sign a permission slip for us to drink on our Italy trip in '98. I was 16. Our teacher said the rationale was that "you can't go to Italy and not drink wine!" Yeah, I didn't have a sip of wine on that trip, but vodka, now that's another story.
I think that whether or not you sign a permission slip, if the kids want to drink, they will drink.

I went to Italy and Ireland when I was 16 and 17 and drank with the chaperones who were mostly nuns. There was no permission slip back then.

I would sign for my kid. My theory is they're going to do it anyway, so I would have an honest conversation with my child about being responsible and then trust (and pray) for them to do the right thing.

Maybe I'm naive but I'd think the same - they should never be unsupervised.
Then the chaperones become the alcohol evaluators. How much is too much? What are they responsible for in situations where a kid drinks too much?
I'm so surprised at this, the liability alone.

I think that's WHY there are permission slips. They are probably carefully worded to exempt themselves of anything that happens because the students were drinking. I wonder though what happens if your parents DON'T sign the slip- would they still be allowed to go at all?
ETA: And shhhhiiiiiiiiit, I thought our overnight field trip to Boston was cool.  LAME.

We went on a school trip to Italy when we were 17 and we definitely did our share of drinking.
There were no permission slips but it was a given. Some of the drinking like at restaurants etc. our chaperones knew about. But we would all drink in the rooms too after the chaperones went to sleep. One time we were actually being housed in a convent and the nurses actually had tons of alcohol there for everyone to drink lol!
The way I see it, at 17 they are probably drinking already and even if they aren't they will be going away to school the following year where they will definitely drink. These aren't 13 year olds.

Its going to happen regardless or not. This is what happened on hour high school trip in 96 and everybody got in trouble and almost cancelled the whole trip.
One person got shi faced and ruined it for everybody.

i dont remember because 1997 was a long time ago, but i dont know if it was the school that sent the permission slip or the tour guide company we used.
We were not supervised every second.... way too many kids compared to adults.

In most school trips at that age ( I went on a school trip to DC also at that age) you are given a couple hours of free time everyday to hang out with your friends etc.

I think they are going to drink if they want to drink. Raise a kid with good judgement and values. That's the best defense in this situation.

What's the itinerary for this trip?? Bars, pubs, liquor stores etc??? I mean how many chances are these kids actually going to have to drink? Won't they be going to museums and such??

They will go site seeing, but they will have an opportunity to drink at every meal.
We landed in Spain, got into Madrid and went to McDonalds... they sell Beer in McDonalds... so Lunch and dinner. And pretty much every night after dinner.

That's what I remember, Jugglemom! :) I remember wondering the streets of Paris alone or with a small group of my same age school trip companions at the age of 16. Nobody stopped us and we had no alcohol permission slips!  The thing is: we also had absolutely not interest in alcohol what so ever. We were all geeks and history buffs and all we cared about was history and architecure!
So, really it all comes down to the child: if you son or daughter are party animals, chances are they should probably NOT be going on this trip at all, permission slip or not!

I went to France in Junior year of HS and parents were asked to sign a permission form to drink. My parents wouldnt sign it.
I drank anyway
