All things Franklin Square

Hi! We are waiting to close on a house in Franklin Square. I am somewhat familiar with the area, having grown up in Queens and spent a considerable time in this area as a kid as well as an adult. We sold our co-op in Glen Oaks, so we are very familiar with the surrounding towns.

Now that we will be moving into here, I need to know the important things: best Chinese, best pizza, best supermarkets, best pharmacy, best Italian deli, best bagels, best parks, best places to take the kids, etc. I know that "best" is subjective, but I need a starting point.

And if anyone has any recommendations for childcare facilities or babysitters, I would appreciate that too!

Thanks in advance!

Re: All things Franklin Square

A&S Bagels on Hempstead Tpke. Excellent.
Eastern Meat Farms- for cold cuts, etc. THE BEST.
Prince Umberto's pizza used to be great, not sure if it still is.
Pretty sure she goes to Sunny's for Chinese take out still.

Which part of FS are you going? I grew up on Dogwood.

King Umbertos, on the border of Franklin Square and Elmont, is fantastic!

I agree with the suggestion for Valley Caterers too.

As for groceries...I go to Stop & Shop in West Hempstead. I just find the Pathmark in Franklin Square to be way too crowded all of the time; however, they do have good prices.

All things Franklin Square

I grew up in West Hempstead, right near the Franklin Square border.

A&S Bagels on Hempstead Tpke. for sure.
I always shopped at the Super Stop n Shop on Cherry Valley Ave. (although I think that's considered W. Hempstead).
I second King Umbertos as well.
Jani's for chinese food.
Burger Bites on Hempstead Tpke near Nassau Blvd.

Re: All things Franklin Square

I grew up in Valley Stream (right next door) and DH and I used to have an apartment on the border of FS and Elmont. Here were our go-to's:

A&S for bagels and/or deli
King Umberto's or Cinelli's for pizza
Valley Caterers is my FAVORITE for pies and cakes, they also have great roasted chicken
Stop & Shop for grocery store
Amato's is a great Italian bakery
A&S pork store for Italian deli
CVS for pharmacy

ETA: don't know if you need a vet, but we loved A&A Vet

Oh and not in FS, but my salon (hair, makeup, nails, waxing, etc) was Fox & Company in Floral Park - only about 10 minutes away

Best Deli: A&S pork store on Franklin ave and Valley Caterers

Best Supermarkets: I go to either pathmark or best yet on dogwood ave.
Best Yet has better fruit, boars head cold cuts, and daily fresh baked bread

Best Chinese: Sunny's on Franklin

Best Pizza: Carmela's on hemp typk Or king Umberto's on the elmont/fs border on Hempstead typk

If your in fs chances are you'll go into malverne, rvc, lynbrook and valley stream for things too.

The house is on Russell Street, one block over from Scherer Blvd.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I cannot wait to move and start exploring the area.

Thanks again!

Re: All things Franklin Square

I lived there for a few years and my DH is from there. I agree with much of what was said. Def. use the stop and shop in west hempstead over pathmark, IMO. I still go to eastern meat farms. King Umberto's has great pizza/take out (i'm a bit biased on that one though, lol), if you need delivery i'd take Carmela's over Cinelli's. Valley is like heaven on earth (and now I want a bucket of crispy fried shrimp!)

What wasn't mentioned was Frankly Thai on Hemp Tpke/Franklin Ave. Excellent food!!

Thanks for all the great suggestions. The house is on Russell Street, very close to Hempstead, which is great since my husband still has to commute into the city.

How does the pool work for the summer? Since this will be my first time really living on Long Island I don't know how to go about all this.

Where are you in FS?

And thanks again!

Re: All things Franklin Square

With everyone's suggestion of Valley Caterers I think I need to check this place out ASAP!

Thank you everyone for your suggestions.

Once we are settled, I need to look into childcare for the baby and register the bigger kids for school for September.

For the pool, you can get a season pass or just pay each time you go. It's probably cheaper to get a pass if you plan on going a lot. It was $6 each time we went. You have to show ID (that you live in FS).

I'm off Franklin Ave near the Walgreen's, closer to the SS pkwy.

FS is a great area, just lacks a lot of good restaurants (a lot of pizza/italian).

Re: All things Franklin Square

I grew up in Elmont, my mom now lives on the border of West Hempstead/Garden City/Franklin Square so I'm very familiar with the area!

Pizza: King Umberto's in Elmont (doesn't deliver) or Carmella's in Franklin Square (does deliver)

Groceries: Stop & Shop in West Hempstead

Silver Star Diner in Franklin Square has really good diner food, so does Stop 20 in Elmont.

Jani in Franklin Square has great Chinese food and sushi.

A&S Bagels has good bagels but I prefer My Three Sons on Covert Avenue in Floral Park.

The Lucky Duck is a great restaurant you should try! Very family friendly and the prices are great - we had our rehearsal dinner there. It's on Nassau Blvd. in Franklin Square.

Elmont Nails in Franklin Square does a good job - Kim is my favorite for waxing.

ETA: Places to take the kids: The movie theatre in Franklin Square on Hempstead Turnpike is really nice.
I used to work at Herrill Lanes bowling alley in New Hyde Park, they have leagues bowling Monday-Friday but there are always lanes available Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday nights they do rock and bowl - music, black lights, trivia and prizes!

Ooo yes! I forgot about Stop 20 in Elmont...awesome diner, and it's super close to where you are in FS.

For vets, I'd recommend Quality Vet on the Elmont/FS border. We've always been very happy with them.

I grew up in Franklin Square, moved away for a bit and currently (temp) back in Franklin Square. I agree with mostly all the above...with the addition of "Sunny's" for Chinese, "King Kullen" is better supermarket to shop.
Also, "Lia's Pizza" on Dogwood Ave has great pizza too!
Welcome to the neighborhood, you'll love it here, and the schools are great too! Chat Icon

ETA: a GREAT place to go out to eat and hang is "Shackleton's". A great place for German food is "Plattduetsche Restaurant"

I also recommend A&A, specifically Dr. Longo - she was absolutely excellent with treatment/care for our elderly cat who passed recently at the age of 18 1/2.
