ALL drop side cribs are banned. NEW INFO

I am sitting here watching Fox 5 news and they are now saying that the government has banned the manufacturing of ALL drop side cribs. They urge all parents, If you have a drop side crib, dismantle it right away. There are agencies working with parents that can not afford a new crib.
There have now been 38 deaths due to drop side cribs.

We got rid of ours, and got this cheaper one from Walmart. I've been really happy with it, and I see it now comes w/ a free mattress! A good option for people who want a new fixed side one that won't break the bank.

That is what DD has but ours is the dropside version, we got the repair kit that disables the dropside feature. It's going right in the trash when DD is done with it.

Re: ALL drop side cribs are banned. NEW INFO

That was inevitable! Nobody is selling new drop side cribs anymore so it was a question of time until they said "officially" that they were unsafe.

Some manufacturers have a "replacement kit".

They sent us complete new side panels with new hardware. They sent us BOTH sides too. Not just the drop side. So this is not just attaching the exisiting side panels wtih screws like some manufacturers did.

Check with your manufacturer if they have a recall and replacement policy.

One thing my mom and I were thinking of doing was putting L brackets on the bottom of the drop down side so that it wouldn't be able to drop down at all.

Did they say not to use the repair kit?? I was just on the phone with my manufacturer and they said that the CPSC approved their repair kit.

Granted mine still shakes with the repair kit, so my daughter has yet to use it since, but I would like to know why they aren't replacing these cribs.

I did not hear them specifically say to not use the kit. They actually made no mention of the kit. The women that they interviewed said, "We are urging all parents to mismantle the cribs" She said that if you can not afford a new crib, there are agencies out there that can help you. She did not get specific on what agencies.

My husband screwed it shut to match the other side. He happens to be a carpenter but I watched him do it and he certainly didn't delve deep into his professional skills, lol.

I don't think it will be that difficult and this way I am eliminating the ability for it to drop

Ugh...well DS is still in his dropside crib....we have no end in sight as to him being ready to come out of it.....he doesn't try so i am not encouraging it.

BUT there is no way we can even think about affording a new crib now....so I think DH will be screwing it tight in place & when DS is done with the crib out it goes.

I still have a gorgeous, beautiful drop side crib I don't intend on throwing out. Both my kids used it and it's in excellent, brand new condition. I will be using some screws and bolts to make it non-drop on that side. I am not having more kids (that I know of Chat Icon), but I will keep it for use in the family.

The issue is not for the panel to drop down but to come off the track on the bottom part. Making it a head trap. So if you are using brackets make sure the panel cannot come down but has also no give in and out of the track.

The L brackets are going to go down under the rail and it will make it so that the rail will not be able to move at all.
