Advice needed on my adoption situation- ***UPDATE --FINAL UPDATE ON SUZY
So I FINALLY got in touch with the lady and things are on the move for next week for me to possibly adopt the 13yr old deaf lab
My concern is that she mentioned this dog (13yr old lab) has not been around a baby in a long time and has been suffering from ear infections. Their concern is that my DD may pull on her ears and 1. that would hurt her and 2. she might snap at dd
I know DD has to learn boundaries and I know this very well, considering all of my dogs issues.
On one hand - this is something any child can do to any dog. Every child can pull on a dogs ear and the dog might snap.
On the other hand - I dont know this dog at all so it makes me nervous.
***FINAL UPDATE
So it seems Suzy was adopted out to a family in vermont. We were away for a couple of days and something came up with Suzy foster mom. There were 2 applications for suzy - me and a family in vermont. There were some concerns for us, as listed above and also my dog Murray has some issues so we werent sure if they would get along. So the shelter manager took suzy to vermont to meet the family and it worked out really well.
She didnt want me to be upset but what if things didnt work out with Suzy and us and she missed her chance with the family in vermont? So , I understand. She has a family now and that is most important.
So I am continuing my search on petfinder. We really want to get a senior pet, but the other dogs I have looked out either dont get a long with dogs/cats or havent been around children in a while. So that doesnt work for me. We might ended up trying to find a puppy so we can have a fresh start. We'll see. Either way, we will save a dog, whethere it be an oldie or a baby!

Re: Advice needed on my adoption situation
Can you bring her to meet the dog? I would do that and let her spend extended time around any new dog, to evaluate how they interact. Also, make sure your DD doesn't have allergies too.
Would they consider waiting to complete the adoption process until the ear infection clears up? Sure it could happen to you anytime but it would be good to have a healthy dog joining your family, to not add to the stress of it.

from the way it sounds, i think she has chronic ear problems because she is also deaf.
I am going to go to a meet and greet with DD and my dog next week.

I think all you can do is go to the meet and greet. You do have a valid concern and need more info. Whatdid the lady say? Usually they will say no children if the dog cannot handle children or snaps.

Re: Advice needed on my adoption situation
I agree with the previous posters - a meet and greet seems like the best way to go.
I hope it works out!

Oh D...you tried so hard and you can sleep at night knowing you did your best. You wanted her. Good for you.
There are so many, you are bound to find a pet to rescue, one who will get along with Murray and the baby.
Please keep us posted.

I commend you again for what you are trying to do, and I am happy to hear Suzy has a good home, even if it is not with you.
I hope that you find the right fit for your family soon!

I'm really sorry it didn't work out for you! I am glad Suzy has her forever home though. What a special dog to have two suitors like that.
What are the issues that your existing dog has? Long Island Labrador Retriver Rescue has a 9 year old and 10 year old available for adoption. We looked there first before we got Brinkley.
