Adding Rice Cereal to Formula
Has anyone done this? If so, what kind did you use? DS is hungry every 2 hours, sometimes earlier and also spitting up very frequently...so the Doc said i could put a little bit in his formula, so I wanted to try that to see if it would fill him up a little more and help w/ the spitting up.

Adding Rice Cereal to Formula
I would increase the amount of formula before I added cereal but that being said if your Ped ok'd then I might consider it.
What what I have read there is not evidence that the cereal helps in filling them up.
Have you tired uppign the amount?

Yeah, well he also has a spitting up issue, so she really suggested it for that as well. Everytime we upped the amount, it would use increase the amount he spits up.

How old is he? It's totally normal for very young babies to eat often.

He's almost 4 months. But spits up a lot also.

So DS has reflux and the doc said to the same.. I tried for 2 nights and he screamed at the top of his lungs... I dont think he was ready or cared for it... I tried oatmeal and rice - separate occasions.
We just gradually increased how much formula he's taking and that seems to be doing the trick. He's 4 months today

He's almost 4 months. But spits up a lot also.
You might want to try the AR formula. I think it is Emfamil. It acutally has cereal in it I think. It is suppsed to reduce spit up. A firend used it for her DS and said it did work.

DS has reflux and spits up A LOT. He sees a pediatric gastro for it who has put him on Zantac. He's also suggested we try adding rice cereal or oatmeal to his bottles - but that's for the acid reflux. Cereal won't decrease the spit up.
And from having tried the cereals in DS's bottles, I can assure you it doesn't decrease the spitting up or keep him full longer. Only more formula does that.

Actually cereal can decrease the spit up because the drs feel if its thicker it has less chance of coming back up. Thats why they suggest it for reflux babies.
Try beech nut either rice or oatmeal and i believe its 1teaspoon to every 2 oz of formula. You will need to change the nipple on the bottle because it eont go through the reg nipple. Try a Y cut nipple or faster flow nipple to avoid this.

MrsBurgos- How many oz does he take?
he takes .6 every 8hrs. We have his 4mnth well baby check up on Friday... I wouldn't be surprised if we potentially increase the dose - only because of his growth... but I can let ya know if we do.

We did as per our GI doctor for spit up and minimal weight gain and very frequent loose stools. We did 1 tbsp rice cereal per 4 oz. bottle of formula.

I switched to an AR formula due to reflux... which has the rice starch in it. It did nothing to.keep her full longer.

I add rice cereal to DDs bottle bc she has reflux and she still eats every 3-4 hours like she did before, I don't think it keeps her full longer. If your ped. suggested it I would try it though, he might need something to thicken the formula to keep his belly less empty, every baby is different.
