Adding rice cereal to formula? **Added another ?**
My dr wants us to try adding rice cereal to the bottle since DS had bad reflux (cant us the special formulas since DS needs the preemie formula still)
My dr said add 1 tsp cereal for every oz of formula but this seems like alot? Most books ive read about it seems like they suggest only 1 tsp per the whole bottle
Also Do you have to make the nipple bigger to get the formula to flow better? How do you do that?
ETA - I usually premake a few bottles ahead of time for DS - is it ok to add the rice ahead of time and let it sit in the frig?

i had to do this with my DS.. i just put 1sp for the whole bottle.
and he was actually fine with the nipple size.
i am not sure about the 1sp per oz.
maybe you can call back just to make sure?

the dr said it a few times and actually wrote it down also - im only giving 2 oz right now anyway but maybe i'll start with 1 tsp and see how that goes

I only added 1 tbsp in the bottle, I think he was taking about 4oz then.
We just cut the level 1 nipple a tiny bit to open it up.

dd is 7 weeks, and we have been adding apprx 1 heaping tbsp of rice to her 4 or 5 oz bottle for her reflux since 4 weeks old. The newborn nipples are fine. The consistency is not thick at all.
It's like it went from skim milk consistency to whole milk/ half n half consistency.

Neonatologist told me the same thing when my son had bad reflux.
He told me to start with 1 tsp per 2 oz of formula. Start with that, then move up to 1 tsp per oz if that doesnt work.
It's a HUGE help. I wish I had done it sooner!
Also, I moved up from the medium flow to the rapid flow and he had no problem getting out the formula.
I wasnt sure how to make the nipple larger, and couldn't find a pin to do it with :)

Do the medium/rapid flow nipples have bigger holes or just more holes?

I recently had to do this too! This what my dr said: 1 TABLEspoon for every 2 oz of formula. You need to make it thick enough for it to sit in his stomach without coming up but not too thick that he can't suck it out of the bottle. Also, rice cereal started to bind him a little so now we alternate rice cereal with oatmeal. We tried every nipple and the type that worked best for my DS was Level 3 (we use dr browns and born free bottles).
This has really worked for my DS so I hope it works for you too! It will take a few days but you will see a big difference! Good luck! FM me with any questions!

I tried the Y cut nipple but found it to be way too fast for my DS. He was choking.
