Paying for a field trip?

Is this common? No snark.. Surprised. It's a little over ten dollars and it's to see a performance. It's for elementary school age.

Thanks !

Re: Paying for a field trip?

I'm not sure what you're asking?

Are you asking if it's common to pay for your child to go on the field trip?

If so. Yes, it's common. At least it was when my daughter was in school.

Depends on the trip. Some are free, some you pay for. It's common.

.... Just a question!

And no.. I don't recall having to pay for any field tips until this one.... Not a problem to pay... Just haven't had to do it before.. That's why I was asking. Sorry.

Maybe I just can't recall if I paid last year or not. Anything is possible these days - too much going on!

Paying for a field trip?

Yes it is common but I will say that in kindergarten we were just asked for $25 at the beginning of the year and that paid for all field trips and class parties. So I wasn't asked again during the year to pay.

Re: Paying for a field trip?

Yes, it is standard. Who else would be paying for admission?

Re: Paying for a field trip?

Haven't had any yet (DS is in K) but I imagine we will pay.

Our PTA is already hurting financially, and many parents in the district are strapped for cash to boot.

They do try to support assemblies and such for the kids.

Re: Paying for a field trip?

Yes, it's common. We also pay for bussing. It's possible they included that in your fee.

Re: Paying for a field trip?

Yes it's common. Our parents usually have to pay at least $15. The cost of a bus has gotten very expensive.

Re: Paying for a field trip?

We have always paid for field trips. I have never heard of not paying. We pay upfront in September for all the trips. I paid $23 total for one kid and $18 total for the other. They gave us a sheet that listed the trips...then say x trip was $8, y was 5 and z was $8. I got the same breakdown for my other child. They collect it all upfront in one check because they said they have to prepay the class trips and this way it is all taken care of in advance. Yes it is a pain but I would rather pay it now then have to send in $8 here, $12 there etc.

Re: Paying for a field trip?

Ds is in 4th grade and some of the field trips during these years have been free, but most of them have been with a cost between $5 and $15.

Sometimes the trip is free when it is to a place that has no entrance fee and is relatively local...i.e. local nature preserve/marsh, library, etc.

Re: Paying for a field trip?

When I was in school a long long time ago, I don't recall us paying for field trips, but it's not like my parents would have told me either. Chat Icon

DS is in Kindergarten & has a field trip tomorrow. He had to pay $6, but the PTA covered the cost of the bus. I'm a chaperone & I have to pay a fee also.

My kids aren't in school yet but I would have thought they'd be covered by the school honestly. Don't feel silly for asking, I would have been a bit surprised too. What happens for kids who's parents just can't afford it?

Most of the time the teacher pays , some schools or PTAs have funds set up for that situation also.
