Childhood obesity...this got me today

I went to 7-11 to get a cup of coffee
Out walks a mom and her daughter (maybe 13 years old)
Mom is heavy and her daughter is even heavier.
Mom has a huge slurpee and girl has a big slurpee and a donut.

It made me so sad. Sad that her mom (I am assuming it was her mom) isn't teaching her healthy eating habits.

This girl will have life long health issues Chat Icon

Maybe I'm naive because my kids are young but this really struck me.

Re: Childhood obesity...this got me today

I hate seeing that. The mom is setting such a bad example & unfortunately these habits are likely to stick. I don't know if it's a lack of education concerning healthy lifestyle, or if it's a lack of motivation to take care of oneself, or both. Kids are developing heart disease, diabetes, & other weight-related health issues at a younger & younger age. It's sad that it's something so preventable too.

It's definitely really sad but I disagree with you on one things. It's not so easy to prevent anymore. Most traditional supermarkets have horrific ingredients in all of the products. Chemicals react to everyone's body and something as simple as an ice pop laden with artificial dyes and corn syrup isn't the same as an ice pop from whole foods that has real fruit and organic cane sugar or agave.

So my point is (not in this 7-11 situation) is that is IT actually kind of hard to food shop know. You have to be educated on all the additions that are being made to our food.

However in the case a slurpee and donut is pretty obvious and really really sad. These food are literally so addictive.

Stuff like that kills me too. It's just so sad because the child doesn't know any better and will develop poor eating habits and health.

What really gets to me is watching my students eat the crap they do for lunch and snack. I really want to throw done if their "food" in the trash where it belongs.

The good news is that it is possible for these children to turn their lives around. Speaking from experience, I became aware of healthy eating in my 20's and I have lost a significant amount of weight (and improved my health, I'm sure).

I think the best thing we can do is to set a good example for our children and educate them about nutrition and good eating habits.

Definitely agree with you. I have become very aware that many foods contain questionable ingredients. It is hard to truly eat healthy these days. That definitely adds to the problem. This is why I think education plays a large role in healthy eating.

Re: Childhood obesity...this got me today

I am a person with very bad eating habits. I know all about nutrition, ingredients, etc. However, it's hard for me to eat that way because I don't enjoy healthy foods. There are times that I feel like if it's a choice between a salad or grilled chicken or something and not eating, I'd rather not eat.
Those healthy foods do nothing for me. I'd rather eat a bag of M &M's for dinner.
It's terrible, but I can't help it.
I love junk food.
Very luckily for me, gentics have been kind to me so far and I don't struggle with my weight and my cholesterol, sugar levels etc are all good. If my health were suffering, I know that would probably motivate me more to force myself to eat better no matter how miserable it made me.
My point though is you can educate people all you want on healthy eating, but at the end of the day it isn't easy to eat like that, and sometimes the not so gret choices just taste and feel better, hence making it easy to slip back into.
Eating is also very emotional for some...myself included.
It's just not easy.

I totally get what your saying! I don't eat healthy all the time! I eat carvel, mcdonalds sometimes, love French fries etc. but I have a balance... I gain a few pound I cut back.
I get it is a disease. But as a parent I feel like you have a duty to not pass on these bad choices/habits. A 3 pm snack at 7-11 isn't necessary. Had this mom and daughter not been significantly overweight I wouldn't have thought twice. But as a parent I feel like in this situation I would say "no".

I agree with everything. Except that a 3 pm snack isn't necessary. My child would be a total beast without his afternoon snack. Usually he gets it at aftercare or at home. But, I am on the run we do stop at 7-11. I try to steer towards healthier choices but, his snack at school has to be healthy and sometimes I do let him get something crazy. It just has to be in moderation. He can't do that everyday. If you never allow treats kids will go crazy when they are in control of their own diet. My son loves his fruits and veggies and also loves his treats. It's because of this balance that I think he will be ok in life.

Same here. My DD is only 6 months and I'm trying to get back into my healthy habits so that she can learn from me and not see me struggle. I don't want her to see life as one constant diet.

I completely agree with you but I'm betting you don't go for the large serving sizes with a donut. I know on the rare occasion my kids have a slurpee, they get a small. And a donut is not a same day snack unless its a special occasion of some sort. I guess when we see over weight people we are more critical because we assume they make these bad choices regularly.

I agree that I even need my 3pm snack, BUT it doesn't have to be junk and the reason I have it, is to stay full until dinner so I try and have something with some protein in it too.

Re: Childhood obesity...this got me today

I'm guessing the fact they were already obese called attention to it.

DS turns sideways and disappears, and it's not uncommon to see him leaving 7-11 with this same meal choice.

On a personal note, I have a lot of family who are like this and I honestly feel they are eating themselves to death.

It's almost like being a drug addict in my mind, but with food.

Yes, that's kind of what I meant...if you saw me and my Dd leaving 711 with those things you wouldn't have thought twice because we are thin. But in reality thin doesn't always mean healthy. But like I said, if I were overweight or developing health issues from my horrendous eating habits, or worse, I saw my DD becoming overweight I'd be more motivated to try to change.
So I get your point 100%,

I don't think the 'when' of eating is an issue. If you're hungry you should eat- but the choice is everything.

I struggle with my weight but I am finally making headway. And I've had conversations- honest and hard ones- with my daughter who is seven. I make sure she knows that I have bad habits I want to fix and I don't want her to have those habits. I never make her clean her plate if she's full- that in itself has been a huge problem for me because as a kid I always had to do it. And I am very careful to keep the focus on health vs. appearance and never use the word 'fat'.

But as others have also said sugar is hugely addicting. There is so much crap in our food today and it does not help. And bad habits are really, really hard to break. I'd be willing to bet that woman's own mother was heavy.

Re: Childhood obesity...this got me today

What makes me sad is that I would honestly LOVE nothing more than to cook all of my kids' meals from scratch, never feed them 'fast' food, never buy anything in a box.

But the reality is, I spend 40 hours per week at work, commute an addtl 45 minutes each way, drag them to after school activities, birthday parties almost every weekend, laundry for our family of four, clean our house, take care of our 2 pets, various family obligations, clothing shop for them & me, plan school parties, somehow find time to work out and spend 'alone' time with my DH etc etc etc.

I hate that I sometimes have no choice but to feed my kids pancakes from a mix or spaghetti and jarred sauce and a side of fruit for dinner, or even <gasp> McDonalds, but sadly, it is my reality right now due to having to work FT and somehow fit the rest of all of this stuff in. Chat Icon

eta: I am not making excuses for the woman & her daughter, just saying it isn't easy to manage all of the demands placed on us these days & sometimes we all cut corners SOMEWHERE in life to get through…

Way to judge people on two seconds of their lives

Some people on this board are really over the top with their judgment about eating, weight, and nutrition. You aren't perfect because you eat healthy; you have flaws too, so stop berating people on their flaws.

If people wore their insides on the outside, everyone would be a little ugly.

I am overweight, but I eat pretty damn healthy. Virtually no beef, pork, chips, cookies, ice cream, only whole wheat bread/pasta, tons of vegetables and fruits, low-fat dairy only, etc. Yet on the one day of the month that I go get ice cream or something, I have to worry about some pretentious person, which is the image you're giving of yourself here, judging me? Next time, remember that you aren't perfect.

Listen I'm not saying I'm perfect by any means!
And I'm not trying to judge anyone
I'm saying it made me sad
It made me sad that this 13 ish year old girl was already having trouble walking because of her weight.
Maybe this was a special treat of some kind
But trying to put myself in that position as a mom I would try to find other ways to celebrate or treat my dd to something maybe a mani and a pedi, shopping etc

I was making an observation and sharing how it made me feel. Perhaps I'm wrong for feeling that way but I am not saying I'm perfect!

I honestly don't pay much attention to what strangers are doing and I really don't care.

I do feel I can comment about how frustrating it is for my own family to life an unhealthy lifestyle.

There is no need to actually go to Mcdonalds daily when you are having difficulty walking because of issues with your knees and hips because of your weight.

This is why I equate their problem to being a drug addict.

I need to lose weight myself and will take full responsibility for the fact that I don't always eat healthy or exercise, plus my age is finally catching up with me.

Re: Childhood obesity...this got me today

I'm very sensitive to this issue. I've battled weight my entire life. I have a 17 year old that is being recruited to run D1 in college and an 11 year old that, frankly, could stand to lose a few pounds (60th percentile for height 90th for weight).

Here's the rub, I do everything in my power to help my younger daughter, she plays travel basketball, softball and, field hockey. But, she is more into theatre and, is really more cerebral by nature. Also, she likes to eat. Unfortunately, I'm familiar with that disease. However, my 17 year old eats more than 3 men together which, is of course, due to her activity level but, she also was lucky enough to get my husband's genes. This was apparent to me from the time they were both babies.

I refuse to make my younger daughter feel badly. I cook healthy meals but, there are cookies in my house. Frankly, I'm more concerned about setting up an eating disorder. Unfortunately, I've had a front row seat watching many high school female athletes battle eating disorders. Makes my little ones couple of extra pounds look like a day at the beach. My pediatrician, who is a level headed man, agrees. His philosophy is keep her moving and puberty should take care of the rest.

Now I'll get off my soapbox.

I couldn't agree more. We eat very healthy 95% of the time and I am overweight. My child is on the upper percentiles for height and weight, but is learning excellent habits from me at home because I want better for my child than what I learned as a child. As such, my child loves fruits and veggies and drinking water, but every now and then asks for a treat and I don't see something wrong with that. I wanted to cry when I read this post. Now I should be worrying what every skinny person who doesn't know me thinks when I cave in and get my child a munchkin once a month?

Re: Childhood obesity...this got me today

Please do not quote! I agree with 2girlsforme. My DD has always been on the heavier side, even before she was born she was large inside me! Always was in the 80th percentile for weight. She is a good eater, but I never gave alot of junk. However, i have NEVER stopped her from having junk b/c I feel that creates a larger issue of a child going wild when they get their hands on junk food. So we have always had junk in moderation, I always have some junk food in the house My DD actually would just take 2 cookies and stop on her own, vs going wild when cookies are in front of her. For us that has always seemed to work.

Until this summer. Coincidentally…she had her first slurpee this summer. And she loved it. But we relaxed a bit too much, weren't as active due to the heat, and let our 5 yo eat many more sweets and crap than normal. And in 6 weeks my 5 yo gained 4 lbs, which is alot for a 5 yo to gain in 6 weeks. We were eating out alot, she was having way too many ice creams, candy, I had gotten lazy and stopped cutting juice in half, and even let her have some soda if out to eat. I didnt realize until all of a sudden her clothing was tight, uncomfortable and her belly had increased in size. My heart sank. I felt I allowed her to eat so badly and it quickly caught up to her.

I immediately cut back all of the above bad habits drastically, while never saying a word other than we were eating too much junk, we have to eat healthier. When she was hungry, I just gave her healthier things vs junk. I always allow her to eat, never cut back her food in anyway (thats not healthy to do to a child), I just majorly decreased her junk intake. And her belly has gone down, her clothes are fitting better, and the scale actually has gone down 2 lbs also. Just from the no junk and eating healthier now that school has started, and I can pack healthier choices for much of her day.

So I do know too much junk can absolutely make a child plump up pretty quickly, at least it did for my child who has the tendency to be heavier, as she has since she was not even born. I too will never make my DD feel badly. When I diet, I don't ever say I am on a diet, I never comment on her weight or my own. I refused to bring her to WW with me when I go b/c I didnt want her to get obsessed with weight or think too much about it. I want her to be healthy, not eat alot of junk, but never not have junk.

I am sure the OP didnt mean to make anyone feel badly! Some people absolutely don't eat slurpees and junk but just have the tendency to be heavier regardless. But I know those junk foods caught up to my child very quickly, based on her own history and metabolism. And it quickly reminded me that some people really have to watch their junk intake or it quickly adds on the lbs. And it's my job to help my child not become overweight, esp if she has that tendency, but WITHOUT giving her a complex or obsession about it. I absolutely never want my child to feel badly about herself if she is heavier, or to try to be a super thin child when I don't think that's in her genes. I can only be cautious with the junk, to help her be the best she can be. Please do not quote!
