Would you think this is weird? Playdate and DH related.
I have playdates with some moms from school, and this one mom's DH shows up sometimes. Her kid will be invited to birthday parties and the whole family comes. I've come to expect it.
We had a beach playdate with 4 moms, and her DH came. My DH thinks its weird, which I kind of agree. Because why does this guy even want to hang out with a bunch of moms? He seems harmless. But DH thinks it's ridiculous. I honestly think if I invited her to my house, her DH would come. Because it's just awkward, I won't be doing that. But group playdates I'm fine with. DH thought it was overkill, going to the beach.
Thoughts?

I don't think it's weird that a dad wants to be with his kids, and watch them play with other kids. I go to all of DC's playdates, I've been to just about all of the parties they've been invited to, and most of the Gymboree classes. I think it's nice that he wants to be involved.

I don't see anything wrong with it either. It's nice for him to be involved. I could see how it might be a little uncomfortable from your standpoint and the other moms' if you are viewing it as girl time with the kids. But unless that was made clear, I don't find it at all weird that the dad comes along.

I don't think it's weird. If DH were home and wanted to come, I wouldn't mind.

I get that it's cool that he wants to spend time with his kids. I think it's nice. But at the same time, he's hanging out with a bunch of moms. I guess, because my DH would never do that. He spends time with my kids. But he's not about to hang out with a bunch of chicks.

I definitely think it's odd. My DH would never do this in a million years, and I can't think of anyone else's DH who would.
ETA: I don't think the bday party thing is weird, but the playdates with just moms definitely is!

But that's kind of what it is. All of our husbands are at work, so it's the moms hanging out and the kids playing. No other husbands are ever involved.

Right, but my guess is that he is probably viewing it as a bunch of parents hanging out with their kids, not separating by gender.

Re: Would you think this is weird? Playdate and DH related.
I don't think its strange at all? Does he engage in conversation with you and the other moms? Does he not have a job or have a job that allows him to go out during the day? He could be bored and looking for company. Maybe his guy friends are all single and don't have a wife and kids. It can be hard for people if your friends aren't at the same stage of life that are you. He might just prefer the company of women over men. I know some people that are like that. Just as I know some women who prefer the company of men over women. It's sad it can be seen as weird or odd for a person to hang out with a group that might consist completely of the opposite sex. It reminds of boys having cooties in kindergarten!

To all of you who are saying it's not odd - do YOU hang out with other moms, 3 or more of you, and regularly have a dad join in?

I am confused. Is the mom AND dad coming or just the dad?

Mom and dad. He's the only dad that ever comes.
Like I said, he's harmless. But I just find it odd.

I would find that odd too if it's clearly just moms and it's done often enough that everyone knows this.

Re: Would you think this is weird? Playdate and DH related.
I guess it depends on the dad. Does he come and play with all the kids like just a big kid himself and likes to hang out with the family? I don't think the bday thing there's anything wrong with that. All DH's go to the kid's birthday parties. The guys have fun with the kids. Only thing may be a little weird to me is if it's a bunch of moms hanging out at the beach. That may be weird. When DH isn't working he loves to be involved with the boys and goes to birthday parties, etc.

Re: Would you think this is weird? Playdate and DH related.
For a home playdate, I think it's a tad weird, especially if there's just 1 kid and 2 adults.
For the beach, that wouldn't bother me because the beach can make parents nervous and another set of eyes isn't the worst thing.

They have friends and family with kids. They are always doing stuff together. As do my DH and my family. But my DH would never come with me on a playdate. And I've been doing this for a few years. Every playdate I've ever gone to had always been the moms, because let's face it, we don't usually go on playdates with moms we don't like. Some of these moms I've known for years and would consider them as almost friends, or at least more than an acquaintance. And the Dad's are either at work, or if it's an in home playdate, they're busy doing other stuff, yard work, whatever. They're not hanging out listening to mom/girl talk.

Hedoesn't say much. Just hangs out in the background. And occasionally plays with his DD's.

Re: Would you think this is weird? Playdate and DH related.
During weekends, we spend time together as a family. DH does go to things the kids go to. Yes, even beach and pool things, even people's homes. We playdates with other families and their kids. We do all birthday parties together.
If we would be separate during weekends, we would never see each other.
Likewise, maybe this husband works during the weekend and comes to these things because it's the family's together time. Is he a police officer? Fireman? Work shifts?
It's nothing weird at all.

DH tends to come with me too everywhere when he's home. Our weekends are our family time so we usually do everything together, not 100% of the time depending on circumstances, but most of the time. It's just how we roll. He loves to spend time with me and the kids, we'd rather not be apart on weekends if it can be avoided.

I would use the word uncommon as opposed to odd or weird. I'm a new mommy so I'm not up to the playdate thing yet but I like hanging out with DH and he makes me comfortable around people so I never mind when he comes places with me. If I thought is was an official girls only things I would say so.

Every group playdate we have been on there has always been a dad present. I don't find it odd at all and I sometimes get envious that their DHs want to be so involved lol. I think it's great and more the merrier.

I don't see anything really wrong with it. I've meet up with a few friends at the park, and if DH is off he will come hang out. It's not like he sits with us and hangs out. He wants to hang out with the kids when he's off and has nothing to do.

Your DH should come when he can, that might make things a little less awkward.
Have you ever asked him or his wife why he comes to the playdates?

Re: Would you think this is weird? Playdate and DH related.
Why are play dates for chicks only? I'd welcome some guys at play dates. Maybe they wouldn't be so insufferable then... hanging out with a bunch of women is not my cup of tea. At least with a DH there it might be more interesting!
