Help! Raccoons in our yard!!
What should we do.... we have a tiny maltipoo and I'm terrified to let him out. We have seen raccoons in our yard a few times lately and when DH went to let him out tonight, he saw two going towards our garbage cans. Any suggestions? Is there someone to call?

Beyond making sure your garbage is contained in a sealed garbage can, I don't think there is much to do. They live out there.

Re: Help! Raccoons in our yard!!
honestly I dk if they would go after the dog. I would b more worried about seeing them during the day. The raccoons r more interested in the garbage. We have fox n they do not bother anything. I thiink u really only can call if its during the day n then its animal control. Do u have lids on the trash? if not u can do that and bungee cords. You can also set up a motion sensor light to go off.

I think you need to move you garbage cans and make sure you dog has all it's shots, especially the Lepto shot.

There is no one to call. Honestly I would secure and move my garbage cans but I would also not let my small dog out alone at night if I kept seeing raccoons.

Just as an FYI....make sure your house is secure, with no holes or openings by the roof, etc. They like to live in attics.

you could try something like "sprayshield" they sell it on amazon and at pet stores - it is a citrenella formunla that animals do not like - but not harmful to humans
but i also recomend mving garbage cans too

My friend has a small dog also and they watch as she goes out in the back because of raccoons. One night, she sprinted to the corner of the backyard and they saw the raccoon. She didn't seem to want to attack it, they thought she wanted to play, but the raccoon was so scared, it ran up the tree and stayed up there for a few days!

Homeowners insurance doesn't usually cover the damage raccoons make b/c they are rodents.
I'd call an exterminator asap to set traps.

why? raccoons live outside and in our yards. they are there whether you see them or not.
they haven't attacked anyone and don't appear to be rabid, so why would you call an exterminator?
to the OP--can you keep your backyard lit at night when he has to go out? the raccoons won't go near the light most likely. or keep him on a leash near the house where you can watch him.
