If you nursed while PG....

How long did you go for?

DS is almost 13 months and I am 10.5 wks PG. He shows no sign of giving it up. I still nurse twice a day but do not plan to tandem nurse. I'm trying to figure out how long I can go without him associating it with the new baby? I hoped he would self-wean by now, but he nearly claws my shirt off when I go to get him in the morning from his crib - so clearly he still likes it Chat Icon

i don't have any advice, just Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

if you want to try and wean, why not go into his room with a bottle or sippy cup (whichever he prefers) all ready with his milk?

i imagine it will be tough but i agree with you that it should be done sooner rather than later if you don't want to tandem nurse.

Hmmm.....I have no BTDT advice.

But I would personally want to wean sooner rather than later. Only because you don't want to start nursing the new baby and DS realizes and wants it back again too.

Maybe have DH get him with a cup of milk for a couple of mornings in a row to help break that schedule up.

DH leaves for work before DS wakes up so that won't work. Some mornings I test the waters and try to distract him by changing his diaper immediately, playing, or taking him into bed with me to watch Elmo - but he starts whining and tugging on my shirt going MIIIIILLLLLKKKKKKKKK!

Oh man. I know the tugging on the shirt feeling. But saying mmmilllllk Chat Icon Chat Icon I give you lots of credit!!!

Maybe start cutting the night time feeding first?

Hmm...I'm really trying to think of other ways to wean.

What about pumping? Can you give him a bottle of BM in the morning and slowing shift it over to whole milk? Or does he demand the actual act of nursing?

I stopped pumping before I even started Chat Icon Can't imagine doing it on top of being PG.

Well, I am all out of ideas. Hopefully another mom here has some BTDT advice.

In the meantime have some some sympathy Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I got pg with Eliza when Madelyn was 7 months old. I continued to nurse until she was about 11 months old. By then I was doing 2 nursings a day and she was getting bottles of thawed BM for the other feedings. Thankfully, she would take bottles from me, so the transition wasn't too bad. She only clawed at my shirt for the night time feeding- so DH started having to take that one. It was HARD- but she got used to it within a few days.

Sadly- you may just have to refuse him. I will say though- I've read that toddlers lose that suckling reflex rather quickly, so it's unlikely he'll be asking to nurse if you've weaned him even just a few weeks earlier- so you have awhile before you really *have* to do it.
