BTDT Mommies that nursed...

did you have formula prepared in the house when you go back from the hospital in case it "didn't work out"? My intentions are to nurse, but I understand that you just never know...thanks!

Re: BTDT Mommies that nursed...

I only had sample cans. I had DH hide them, BF"ing can be rough/painful in the beginning and I was dead set on bf'ing-I didn't want the temptation.
For me the 1st 2 weeks were the hardest.

If you really want to BF, def get educated now about it, LIne up an LC, take some classes, read some books. KNowledge is power!

Good luck!

Same here. We had a couple of sample cans and I think the hospital will send you home with some as well if you want in a similac or enfamil bag.

The hospital gave me some samples. I didn't purchase any.

Same here.

I wouldn't go out and buy any extra cans before the birth, you never know what will happen, and even if you do end up giving formula at the hospital, it may not be the same brand as what you bought at home, so you may not be able to use it anyway. The hospitals will usually give you some to take home, and hopefully you'll have someone in your family who can run to the store and pick more up for you when those run out.

Re: BTDT Mommies that nursed...

No- I didn't know about bottle feeding at all- how to prepare them, how to sterilize, powder, RTF- I knew nothing and didn't have one bottle in the house.

big mistake, Matty didn't latch on well and DH had to go out and get stuff the next day- I called my BF crying after a horrible first night home to give me a crash course in bottle feeding. We had the little similac bottles from the hospital for that first night just in case, Thank G-D!

I ended up doing a mixture of pumping, BFing, bottle feeding- but it was very naive of me not to be prepared at all about bottle feeding- I just thought it would go much smoother! Chat Icon

I bought a can and then ended up with samples as well. I wasn't tempted to use the formula, but I am glad I had it because I had to begin supplementing.

I just remember being glad that I didn't have to go out to buy formula then- I don't live on LI, it's a PITA to get to stores and the weather was not so great at this time, so I was glad to have the stuff at home.

Same here. I also refused the "free" stuff from the hospital. I figured I know where to buy formula if I need it.

I knew breastfeeding might be hard in the beginning and I didn't want anything around that might undermine my efforts.

No, I just had it in my mind that it was going to work. I had a few sample cans and then the hospital sent me home with some Similac. I never needed it though. If I did need it, DH could have easily run to the store.

Re: BTDT Mommies that nursed...

Thanks ladies!

As hard as it is for some ladies on here, I really want to give nursing my 100% effort...I've been really set on it from the beginning of my pregnancy...but I also want to be prepared in case my son doesn't latch on...I actually didn't even look at it as a way out of nursing, but rather be prepared and not starve my child Chat Icon ... I will eventually introduce the bottle (going back to work after 3 months) and start mixing both the breast milk and formula.

I have received the Enfamil gift bag from my doctor which contains I believe 8 3oz. bottles of the ready formula. So I guess I'll just stick to that just in case.

In any event, you've all been very helpful in putting things into perspective. Thanks!

We also had a lot of sample cans to use if needed. You don't want to be stuck at 2AM with no food if they don't accept the BM or if you are having a problem BF.

Re: BTDT Mommies that nursed...

I had like 25 bottles taht were given to me in the hospital by the nurse. I have used them all b/c i was supplementing b/c DS wasnt getting enough. They are all gone now and i also have sample of the powder but i dont think DS likes the powder. However, my milk has come in more and i think i am going to stop with the bottles all together.

I'm sure the hospital will send you home with a little stash too.

Re: BTDT Mommies that nursed...

No. for some reason I just never thought that BF would not work for me...very strange I know considering I had never done it before and as it really does not work for some people. I was very relaxed about it but also had the mindset that I would be BF and not giving formula. So there was no formula in our house. thank goodness it worked out!!!
