WITHOUT drama - Thursday Poll
I'm making it a poll...let's try to have an adult discussion w/out the drama and attacking....
Do you believe that someone is "born" gay?
Do you believe that someone "becomes" gay through their environment/external factors?

Re: WITHOUT drama - Thursday Poll
I'm going with born.
there have been scientific studies that show size differences in certain areas of the brain of hetero and homosexuals.
I have read that most people are on a spectrum, most fall somewhere in the middle (not exlicitly hetero or homo) and there are those that fall at opposite ends (expressly homo or hetero)
I think nurture may have some impact on those that fall in the middle in terms of what their sexual preference ultimately becomes, but I think we are all born with certain predispositions.

I totally believe it is genetic. Environment has nothing to do with it.

Absolutely born.
I do not think an environment can cause someone to become gay. If that were true, than another environment can cause someone to become straight.

I think that it is genetic, and environment only impacts whether the person actually "comes out" or whether they hide the fact that they are gay.

When you say genetic - do you mean that one person may be "prone" towards homosexuality based on their family history?
Or do you mean that it's something one is born with - no matter what their family history is.
I'm trying to understand myself the difference of being "born" vs. "genetic."

I've also read about this, and I completely agree.

In reality, I have NO clue what the REAL answer is...
That being said, my "feeling" is that they are born gay.

I have had many homosexual friends in my life. They always told me it was something they discovered, so I voted that someone becomes homosexual. I think you may have meant it differently then I do, but it is fine either way. I am going to avoid the drama until it really heats up in here.

Do you think a male that is raised by (for example) his mother and grandmother (without any male influence/figure in his life) - would be consider environmental/external factors?

Nope - that's exactly what I meant...so you answered appropriately.
Discovered = external factors and becoming gay
vs.
Born = always felt that way

Re: WITHOUT drama - Thursday Poll
I did alot of research on this while in college. You are born gay. This is an ongoing debate with people. Many people feel it is learned. How can one "learn" to be gay?

Re: WITHOUT drama - Thursday Poll
I voted becomes only because I see alot of gay men that have issues with either not having a father or having issues with their father so I think that that may have something to do with it. I think its a bit of both genetic and enviromental.

no. I don't think having too many woman in your life makes you sexually desire another man.
it may make you sensitive to womens issues (or conversely make you hate their yappin' ) but I don't think that type of influence could alter your natural response to the idea of sex with someone of your same sex.

But even in this kind of case, I think it was probably something that was always within them (probably since they were born) but they "discovered" it later in life.
I guess no one can really know for certain though...

Re: WITHOUT drama - Thursday Poll
I say "born".
My brother is gay. We (his family) have always "known", though I think he himself and certain family members didn't want to admit it.
My brother recently "came out" and I was so happy for him.
I told him I always knew, and was hoping he could admit it to himself.
He said he always knew...from when he was a young child. He knew he was "different from his guy friends". He said no one and nothing made him gay. He just was/ is.

Re: WITHOUT drama - Thursday Poll
I think a real homosexual is born with that particular sexual preference, however, I think there are a lot of teenagers out there that claim to be gay or bi, but in reality they're just confused or like to experiment with both. But again, I think a real homosexual is born with that trait and realizes it when he/she starts to experience sexual desires.
I know a few gay people and they actually withheld from dating in their teenage years bc they were really confused. It was not until their late teen and early 20s that they realized and "came out".

Genetic meaning "born with." I believe homosexuality is something that is in one's genes - like hair color or eye color. It may or not run in families, genetic doesn't always mean something that is passed on from generation to generation, it can be a spontaneous mutation that happened when that person was concieved.

and for the most part, we discover who we are sexually at puberty...so before that, a gay child may or may not know they are gay (this may be where the spectrum comes in...and the nuture part plays the role)
an expressly gay male or female may know from an early age b/c they are so far to the left of the spectrum.
someone who's preference evolves over time may feel like it's more of a discovery.

Many of my friends are gay. Most of them say they were born that way. I do have 2 girlfriends that were molested and had awful fathers that claim they cannot trust or get close to men after their experience.

No I don't think that this holds true at all. If this were the case then children raised by gay couples would be gay. And thats certainly not the case.
