2.5 YO...Switch to toddler bed or twin?

I am due w/ Chat Icon in 3 months, and we'd like to use DS1's crib (he is 2.5). I was prepared to use a toddler bed, but then started thinking maybe I should just go straight to twin and use a rail. Any suggestions?

I'd have to buy a new crib mattress either way, so we'd be out over $100 on that, so the money difference isn't huge.

I went to a twin. DS was2y8m I just didn't see the point in the toddler bed....to me it just meant another transition later. Plus DS was getting really tall and the toddler bed is the same size as a crib so it offered no additional room which DS needed.

Went straight to the full bed for DS. He's over 2 and thought it would be tough to transition. He LOVES his big boy bed. Put up the rails so he's safe and no issues.

I'm due in April with our 2nd and we have decided we will transition DD (who is 26 months) to a twin size bed. We will put a bed rail on the side.

How far in advance are you making the change? I am due first week of April, too, and I don't want him to resent the baby for the change if we cut it too close. Chat Icon

That is my dilemma right now too because we were also planning on moving DD to a bigger room when we make the transition (the nursery is much smaller) but right now that room is nowhere near being ready. Depending on when its done will determine my next move. I also don't want her to feel like she's being 'kicked out' for the baby so I'm keeping that in mind. The only thing that makes me stress less about it is that I know the baby will be in our room for at least the first few months so that buys us some additional time. But if things go as I would like them to, I woud like to have her in the big bed by early next month. That way she'll have a good two months or so to get used to it.

Re: 2.5 YO...Switch to toddler bed or twin?

I'd def do twin at this point. The $ right now may not be much different but you'll need to move him to a twin in the not so distant future and then you'll have an extra crib mattress floating around.

That said, I am actually moving my 2.5yo on Thursday to a toddler bed Chat Icon But it's only because we already have it from my older DS, who was 18mos old when I stole the crib away from him Chat Icon If I did not already have it, he would definitely be going into a twin.

Go to the twin bed. Especially if he is tall. I moved DS1 2 months before the new baby arrived. I wanted to give him time to adjust. But, he was fine, and he was just about 19 months. Good Luck!

Thanks, he's over 40" now though he sleeps all curled up like a baby. Chat Icon

Re: 2.5 YO...Switch to toddler bed or twin?

DS went into a converted toddler bed (from the crib) at around 2.5 years old. Then right before Christmas we got him a twin bed because we need the crib for the new baby (who is due in March).

So far transition has been a dream!!

Re: 2.5 YO...Switch to toddler bed or twin?

DS#2 is coming in March so we bought DS#1 a twin bed. He is just about 17 months. He's young but never slept in the crib, does well in our bed so hopefully will in his own Chat Icon Chat Icon

It should be arriving this weekend, a little over 2 months before I am due. I wanted to give plenty of time to set up his room and get him sleeping in his own bed before the new baby arrived. It's going to be traumatic enough having another baby in the house for him so I couldn't imagine going through a sleeping transition at the same time, that's why we are getting it so far in advance.

DD was in a full size around 2.5. I think you will be fine with a twin. No need to waste money on a toddler.

I am switching her to a twin b/c that way, I can read to her in bed, and lay with her if need be.

Re: 2.5 YO...Switch to toddler bed or twin?

Moved DD straight to a twin at 27 months. Ped said to give her 3-4 months in her bed before baby arrived so she won't make the connection.

We switched DD this week to a twinsize from teh crib. She is doing fine with it. I thought teh toddler beds were really small and would be a waste for us, personally

Re: 2.5 YO...Switch to toddler bed or twin?

We're putting DS #1 into a full size bed with rails on both sides. the bed is really low also. So far he's showing interest in actually sleeping it it on his own. This past weekend he would follow me into his new room with his new bed and would close the door and then go lay down on the bed.

I really didn't want to do a toddler bed and then a twin or full because I felt that it was just an unecessary step for us.

Same here. Due April 25. So no experience to offer yet but we plan on doing it ASAP. We are currently finishing our basement which will allow us to move our office which will allow us to make DS a big boy room!

We have a toddler bed in the attic as well and would also need the extra crib mattress so we've decided to just go straight to a twin against the wall with a rail.

May help your decision... A key factor in my choice of twin over toddler is that I took out the rocking chair from the nursery a while ago so we read bedtime stories on the floor. Momma's getting too big and tired for sitting on the floor! By the end of pregnancy, I want to sit in bed with him to read. And, on occasion, he wakes up super early and will come in our bed to snuggle so DH or I, whomever needs more sleep Chat Icon , can go in his twin!
