18 month old and Talking
How many words does your 18 month say? Whenever I read posts on here, it seems like everyone's 18 month old is talking nonstop.
I'd say DS has about 10-12 words/phrases that he will use (all done, thank you, bye bye, dada, mama, please, cheese, uh oh, etc). Recently, he has been making new sounds when he babbles, which is encouraging. (He babbles non stop) His receptive language is seems good and he will follow directions.
Our next check up is at 20 months, but I figured I'd ask here to get a general consensus.

That sounds like more than enough IMO
My DD is 14m and has about the same...I feel like my son had more words at this point but my memory isn't the best and either way so long as they are talking it's all good IMO

We just had our 18 month check up last week for my son. I asked about his speech and the dr said they should have 15-20 words but they are much more concerned about their receptive language until about 2. My son has over 40 words but they aren't understood by all. For example,he says "puhh" for pig. My dr said that is fine at this age.
It sounds like your son is right on track, especially since he follows your directions.

That sounds normal to me especially since he has good receptive language.

Re: 18 month old and Talking
Seems like he is doing great! At 18 months DD only said "No". She didn't even call me mamma or DH dadda. We had her evaluated at 18 months and then again at 2 and she was completely fine. Now she is 27 months and says EVERYTHING!

I have a talker so don't go by me. She was early with talking and later with crawling and walking. She's 20m now but at 18m she probably had over 50 words. She can put together sentences. But I know she's not the norm.

Sounds good to me. I find things come in waves. So you might all of a sudden see more words.

My DS is 17 months and doesn't have a ton of words really. In fact he just started saying actual 'words.' I am a speech pathologist so I maybe be more concerned. He recently started using mama and dada consistently. He says elmo. um for food. He babbles a lot and points at everything. His receptive language is very good. I am still a little concerned about his expressive language since he doesn't really imitate words but I know the tests they use and his receptive language is very high so I doubt he would qualify. I feel like all my mommy friends ask me about language at this age because the pediatrician says they should 15-20 words, but there is such variability at this age. Long as they are understanding individual words, following routines, understanding some 1-step directions, identifying body parts, and pointing I wouldn't be too concerned.

ITA.
And my now 2 year old, at that time, was very similar and now he is talking NONSTOP and sentences -- I mean, it's remarkable.
My good friend who is a speech and language specialist who works with people who have brain injuries and need to relearn how to speak told me that at that age they have like hundreds of words that are just right there WAITING to come out and it'll be like a series of explosive bursts of improvement and as time goes on they just talk more and more but that it is all in there waiting to come out. The best thing for this is the babbling. My son babbled like crazy! And for long periods. And then many words followed.

Re: 18 month old and Talking
DS1 had 7 words until 25 months when he had his language explosion. Ped was never concerned even though I was.
DS2 was speaking in 5 word sentences at 22 months.
They are all different. I think your 18 month old sounds fine

DD2 is 19 months and has about the same number of words.. Although try wrting them down you may be surprised that your DC has more words than you think! Her ped is not really concerned but did suggest an optional 21 mos visit to re-assess. My DD1 at 19 months was having full on conversations with me-- every child is different. I am not worried about DD1 though bc she has "enough" words and understands EVERYTHING

If I recall correctly, the ped wanted at least 25 words by the time they are 2 years old.

Mine had none, not even a word for me. She qualified for speech therapy. It seems like your dc is off to a nice start.

At 18 m all ds said was mama and Dada. He is 2y3m and gets speech therapy and has improved a lot but still doesn't say much. I think your son is doing great.

Receptive language is most important at this stage and with the vocabulary you listed, your son is on a good track and definitely wouldn't qualify for speech therapy at this time.

Jut wanted to say hang in there!
At 2 yr 7 months my ds was evaluated and approved for speech He said 4 words and made mostly sounds lol
He will be 3 next week and speaking now in 3-4 word sentences. He surprises me everyday and it's amazing what the therapy can do

16 or 17 months. At that time, he had no words, not even syllables (I think just "da" was his only sound), so he qualified. I'm glad he was evaluated early, rather than waiting. He is still behind in speech for his age, but with help has improved very much.

I got the paperwork rolling at 17 mos. but specifically waited til 18 mos for the eval. If she's 17 mos, 29 days, she will be compared to 15-17 month olds and thus score higher. Once she is exactly 18 mos, she will be compared to 18-21 month olds, score lower, and increase chances of qualification. This was exceptionally important as dd had good receptive skills so I didn't want her to not qualify due to this.
