13 month old and tantrums
So I'm starting to see some of DS temper developing. I know its completely develomentally normal, and I'm ok with that. But I'm wondering how to address these tantrums...For example - I take a toy away and he starts yelling crying and may hit. I know he's frustrated and can't express it. Do I ignore the behavior until he calms down or immediately redirect. Or if I'm getting food ready and he starts getting annoyed that I'm taking too long, do I go faster or stay the course because he needs to be patient.
How do you handle this?? Or is it way too early to teach these skills? He's our first one and I'm just afraid of spoiling him...

I am going through the same with my 17m old DD. I ignore. Well, I explain that we must wait or we must share. She is slowly getting it.
If she wants to scream/cry, she will. That won't make me move faster

At that age, I tried to avoid as much as possible. I kept things out of sight if she wasn't allowed to have them. If I did have to take something away, I tried to offer something else in it's place. Ideally, something similar or novel to get her interest. Basically, my strategy was avoid and distract!

Distract and redirect. I still need to give my kids some cheerios or something to sit and eat while I prep food for them and they are 20 mo. They don't understand it takes time and their whining and pulling on me makes it take longer. It's easier to just contain them and give them food to make them happy.

ignoring or redirecting are both fine ... he's still too young but in a few months when he starts to understand more, you can "fight back" ... for example, when DS gets angry and throws something on the floor, i show him who's boss by saying "pick that up right now and give it to me" and i'll basically repeat that until he actually listens. Usually that ends his tantrum and he's extra-lovey after but not always obviously. We started doing that around 18-19 months.
kids don't have too much patience at this stage so i think it depends on the situation. I generally do rush a little bit more when he's fussing, but i don't give in and let him out or whatnot. I usually try to distract him (if i'm cooking, i give him a wooden bowl and spoon and let him stir - he loves it)

Great! Sounds like I'm on the right path!!! I'm clueless and I'm a child therapist, which makes it even worse LOL

Christian gets VERY impatient when I'm getting his food ready and is starting to scream. I just ignore and let him scream. I try not to redirect all the time because I don't want to reinforce his bad behavior with something he may like. Kwim? I'm also trying to feed him a little slower so that he'll slowly learn patience. He typically freaks out if I'm now shoving the food in his mouth fast enough.

13 month old and tantrums
Like this morning I couldn't let him climb up the stairs for the 1000th time because we had to go to daycare/work...he was pissed the ride to daycare. Then cried when I gave him to his teacher. She said he's is starting to show a bit of a temper! But she ignores it and it passes pretty quickly. I don't want him to be "that kid" LOL

Re: 13 month old and tantrums
I'm worried about him being "that kid" too. At daycare last week the worker said, "there was an incident with him today." Automatically I thought, "oh geez, what did he do" which I feel horrible about because he's generally a good baby, just really really curious and fearless. It turns out he tried to take some little girls Cheerios, she bit him, and he tried to hit her back. (She's bit other kids too).
I just keep telling myself that he's still young and if down the road his temper or behavior is something I have to address I will. But when that time comes. He's still to young. I think your LO is on the young side too.

Re: 13 month old and tantrums
i had that kid dd1 is now 4 but man she was a mess from 1-3 lol. tantrums could last an hour or so. She would bang her head etc so I had to watch her and couldn't ignore it. she screamed everywhere and anywhere. We lived in Boston at that time and every walk home was a disaster and people looking at me etc. It was a nightmare.
dd2 is 15 months and has them but they last for a few mins. I ignore it for the most part. Let her roll around and cry ans she's over it pretty quickly.
I say do whatever works for you.
As for dinner time, I put dd2 in the high chair and give her something ti eat while I'm prepping. Cheerios, fruit etc. She still eats her dinner so I will do that until I can't anymore

13 month old and tantrums
Yesterday dd thought it was fun to hit me in the head as would scream bloody murder when I made her stop. Its fun the crying and fake tears. I ignore unless its hurting someone then I say no and redirect.
I love her to death but she is starting to push buttons and the tantrums are greatly increasing, as is the whining.

Re: 13 month old and tantrums
I pretty much did the same as OPP with the exception of I sometimes would remove her from the situation and count to 10 to calm down. I called it the calm down count. Shes 2 now and it does work most times when she is totally melting down after a point.

13 month old and tantrums
I try to hug him to calm him and rationalize why he can't have or do what he wants. It calms his tantrums and now when he starts his tantrums, I say "excuse me. Do we act like that?" And he usually calms down so I can explain why. He's 16 months. Sometimes I ignore too- when I can't reason with him.

Re: 13 month old and tantrums
I mostly distract . But when he is being unsafe (which is often) I tell him NO, he then laughs in my face, looks right at me and does it again. I then put him in his crib for one minute as a "time out" when he gets out he usually forgets what he was doing in the first place.
