Pasta, I believe that Macaroni is a specific type of pasta. Its a perversion of the Italian word maccherone and its plural maccheroni.

noodles are the things in a kugel or casserole, macaroni usually has mayo or a cheese sauce, and everything else is pasta

usually I call it "pasta" now, but sometimes I say "spaghetti" even when it's a different type of pasta because as a kid, my mom would say "we're having spaghetti for dinner" even if it was ziti or a different type.... so I'm in the habit of just saying spaghetti.

I am 100% Irish, and macaroni to me somehow equates "elbows", whether or not this in fact true. All other pasta to me, is pasta.
But, I'm also a pre-school teacher and therefore "macaroni" equates "pasta" in pre-school language!
So, I guess it really depends on the context!

I am a child of Irish immigrants, so what do I know about pasta.... if the poll was about potatoes, i could hook you up...
However, FIL is from Italy and I am learning a lot about pasta now Seriously though, I would consider macaroni a TYPE of pasta. DH never refers to pasta as pasta, it's the TYPE of pasta that he's using (i.e. penne, ziti, etc.)
When I hear the word NOODLES, i think Asian food, not Italian. Noodles makes me think of lo mein and the like.

Macaroni...while my mom is Italian, she was born in Brooklyn (so were her parents) I kind of think that NY or American Italian call it Macaroni and real Italians call it Pasta...maybe??

I agree! It is kind of like how "gravy" is an Italian American thing but "sauce" is an Italian thing. LOL

I'm Italian and always called it macaroni, but my #1 pet peeve is when people call macaroni/pasta "noodles" my puerto rican MIL & SIL call it that and it grates my nerves. My MIL offered my then 3 year old some "noodle in butter sauce  " and he looked at her and said "grandma thats macaroni not noodles". ugggggggggggh jsut thinking of it makes me cringe
