Re: Have you ever heard of an "Empty Nest" shower?

To be honest, I think it's a little odd. I would just have family start replacing her stuff as gifts for holidays--when my mom got divorced and left everything behind that's what we did. I would save the money you would spend on the shower and buy new pots and sheets with it.

Re: Have you ever heard of an "Empty Nest" shower?

I think it's a cute idea. I would go!
It would make her feel good - & I also think it would give other people a chance to celebrate another chapter in her life and make it a happy time for her.
I would do it!!

I agree. It's not like you are inviting 75 of her closest. Her family and closest friends know what your mom has gone through and will definately support the idea. One suggestion--maybe make it a night thing so spouses could go, cocktails could be served. I would also make it a surprise!

I have never heard of it before, have never been to one, but would not be oppossed to going for someone close- if your mom's close friends and family know what she is going through, it would be really nice to do.

Re: Have you ever heard of an "Empty Nest" shower?

I think it's really sweet of you to think of her that way...but, I agree with Beth. I think it's a little weird and wouldn't do it, unless you feel she has a very small, close circle of friends that would be into it. JMO, but you getting married is a new chapter in YOUR life, not really your mom's.

Re: Have you ever heard of an "Empty Nest" shower?

I think you are VERY sweet.

However....how would your mom feel about it? I am just thinking from my own situation (my mom is going through the same thing..) and she would be mortified if we threw her a party like that. Just being honest.

My mom would not want people thinking she couldn't buy things on her own. That is just how she is. For christmas I bought her brand new dishes, a complete set because hers were so old and half were missing from being broken over the years. she loved it.

It's just my opinion. I woudln't do it. But i think you are a very kind daughter to look out for her.

That's kind of what I meant. If her friends are also in her situation it's asking them to spend money they might not have to get your mother new housewares. My mom would personally be mortified thinking it was asking for charity and making it public that she doesn't have money.

The stuff you are talking about isn't expensive--you can get a new set of pans for under $100 and new sheets for under $40--I'd just have family who are close to her buy presents. You'd spend more on liquor and food for the party than it would cost to buy her the new things.

I have to agree. I think it's odd. I'd go to one for someone close to me, but I'd still think it very strange. I also think you run the risk of insulting your mother. I know my parents would not think this was a good idea if we did this for them... How does your mom feel about it?

I actually think it's a cute idea, but how would your mom feel about it - would she feel embarrassed? Some people may think it is an insult to their pride - Chat Icon

I have to say it is a cute idea - but i would find it strange if i were invited to one.

my mother would HATE something like that though - she would be mortified as would I. . . but you know your mom and her friends and if she/they would enjoy it - then go for it!

Re: Have you ever heard of an "Empty Nest" shower?

Like others have said...if your mom is the type to go for that and have a great time with family, then go for it! My mother is the type to be insulted. It doesn't matter how it's presented...if it is a party or intimate get together to help her out, she would be mortified. She WOULD view it as charity no matter how tactfully we did it. That's all I was saying...you just have to know your mom well enough to go forth with it...good luck in whatever you decide!

Mary - I'm feeling the same way. My mom would be completely mortified and embarassed if I did this - even if it were her close friends and family. I buy my mom stuff she needs at Chanukah, Mother's Day, birthday, etc and I like to be able to do that.

If you want to celebrate your mom's new start and have a small GTG in her honor - I think that would be really nice, but I personally would not ask for presents for her just because I know it would really embarass my mom.Chat Icon

I think it is a cute idea and I think if your family and friends know the situation they will go.

My grandmother loved to throw "showers" for all of us. She had one for me when I went to college and one when my cousin and I moved in together. It was nice b/c she had passed away by the time I had a bridal or baby shower.

Re: Have you ever heard of an "Empty Nest" shower?

i would do it if you know your mom wouldn't be bothered by it (for the reasons already listed by other posters).

i'd be careful with how you phrase the invite too -- maybe make it talk more about starting over vs. empty nest. I think ppl associate empty nest with kids moving away vs. other reasons she might be starting a new chapter in her life. JMO

that is sweet of you by the way! Chat Icon
