Re: laying on your back

I try to lay only on my sides but sometimes I wake up on my back so comfy and don't want to move. I think they tell you not to because of this:

What positions should I avoid?
Sleeping on your back: This can cause problems with backaches, breathing, digestive system, hemorrhoids, low blood pressure and decrease in circulation to your heart and your baby. This is a result of your abdomen resting on your intestines and major blood vessels (the aorta and vena cava).

Re: laying on your back

I read in the pregnancy week by week book that it cuts off some circulation to the baby

Re: laying on your back

It's supposedly bad because it cuts off circulation to you and the baby. Apparently, your placenta can lay on veins that block circulation.
I was told to start lying on your side as soon as possible to get used to it. I have been on my side since about my 7th week. The left side is better, but I certainly switch back and forth with my right side. I totally avoid my back right now, but can't WAIT to sleep on my back in a few weeks!

I read that somewhere else too.

I can't get comfortable on my back anyway- oddly, it's harder to breathe. I'm 22 weeks.

Re: laying on your back

Everything I've read says 20 weeks.

I'm a side sleeper anyway, so I think I'll be fine.

Re: laying on your back

You'll know when you shouldn't. I would feel like I was going to pass out. The ultra sound person would have to stop and let my lay on my side in the middle of my ultrasounds because I would get so sick. AarghChat Icon

Re: laying on your back

My DR. told me that my body would let me know if it was a problem. I slept on my back throughout my pregnancy without problem. I did my best to stay on my sides, but when I was comfy on my back I didn't bother changing positions.

Same here.

My left side is the worst - it hurts so bad...so I sleep on my right side until she starts kicking - so that leaves my back!! I am propped up on some pillows.

Re: laying on your back

It hasn't felt good to me in quite a while but actually I notice even more of a difference in the right side... not good, something definitely feels different and not in a good way.

My most comfortable position is on my left side. then I read in a book that this, ideally, is the best side because it doesn't cut off the circulation and is best for the "vena cava"... the main vein that runs to the area.

Re: laying on your back

I still wind up on my back sometimes. I dont know if it has to do with the circulation and blood flow for both us and the baby or just us. My dr. never said anything about it. I will ask next time though out of curiousity.

Re: laying on your back

I read and my Dr agreed with 16 weeks. She said at that point the blood circulation could get cut off to the baby.
