Singles trips/events for older people
My mom passed away earlier this year. My father is interested in going on trips and things like that but doesn't have anyone to go with. He went to Mexico with my brother and my brother's family in August and said he felt like a creeper being the only single person. I know he needs to get out and make friends but he is the worst with that and is very much a loner. He loves going on cruises but most of them you have to pay for a double room, even if you are going by yourself. Does anyone have a parent in this situation? I know my dad is lonely and misses my mom. I am not looking to hook him up, just get him to do things other than sit in the house and look at pictures of my mom!

My town runs day trips to the city for Broadway shows, and other events in the city for age 55+. The college I graduated from runs vacations for older graduates and offers single rates.

I’m sorry to hear about your mom :(
How old is your dad? We had a lot of trouble getting my mom to go out and make some friends and it took years but we finally talked her into joining her local senior center. It was the best thing for her. She made so many friends. They went on cruises together , they do group trips to AC, dance parties, weekly card game, etc. she has a bigger social life then her kids! Lol
Maybe see if he’ll join something?
Did you try going on meetup for him to see if there’s any groups doing anything of Interest to him? I went on myself and hooked up with a nice group of people. That may work

We were in the same situation with my dad when we lost my mom. I’m not sure where he lives, but my dad joined a group of widowers/widows at the JCC in commack. They would go to the diner together, movies, etc etc.
There are also lots of tour companies for singles/elders.
I’m sorry to hear about your mom. It just sucks.

He is 64. He isn't really a joiner. Part of the problem is that he has aphasia from a stroke so sometimes it takes him a few times of people saying things before he understands it. I am going to look at meetup though! Ty for the suggestion!

That is a great idea. He lives in Ronkonkoma so it isn't too far. And we are jewish so that is perfect!

We are in NJ, so I am not sure it will work for you, but you should look into your town website. Also, the JCC should run things. I would also look into any local senior centers near you. I am very sorry about your mom.

Your local library runs day trips, also church/synagogue and the senior center. My mom does things through the senior center all the time. Also, Silver Sneakers at a gym is an exercise class for older people. My mom's medicare pays for it.

The Town of Islip has trips. You can find them in the Recreation News. (On the town's website- Parks and Recreation-Nonresidents can also go, if he lives in Brookhaven). I would assume other towns have something similar. Like the other posters said, the Library would also be a good place to check
