have you ever been tortured by an upstairs neighbor?

Yes 2x by upstairs and once by a downstairs. The downstairs we kept complaining to the LL and he promised to get them out- they weren’t paying rent but he kept letting them stay so we left.

Moved into a new place and the upstairs neighbor was a bit case. Wouldn’t let his wife outside even to get the mail. The kids would play outside and one day I saw a sand bucket come down on a rope to give the kids something because she couldn’t go out. The kids were nuts because they were trapped inside when the husband was at work so they ran around the apt at all hrs. LL kicked them out because they stopped paying.

New guy moved in and he was a coke head drunk and would come in at all hrs and blast his music. However we had access to the breakers for the house and would shut his power off. We left him a ton of. It’s and he always apologized by he would do it again. We finally bought our house!

Oh yes! Two friends lived upstairs from us. (We rented the downstairs in a high ranch) They were druggies and drunks. They would blast music all hours of the night, fight, and also fight with the girlfriend of one of them who would visit. We complained to the landlord numerous times. Finally after a few months , they were both evicted, and hadn’t paid the landlord for a few months and stiffed him of about 10k in rent, not to mention all the damage they did. It was torture. Me and DH seriously didn’t sleep for months.

Re: have you ever been tortured by an upstairs neighbor?

I had upstairs neighbors at my first apartment. First I was glad they moved in. Gay couple and they were super friendly and clean (the old tenants were gross) that was until the one who stayed home would BLAST madonna ALL DAMN DAY. literally. It was hell. At one point , when they were both Home, I asked one of them to turn the music on and they other to come down stairs to hear it. They apologized. But it was pointless because within a few weeks, it started all over. I resorted to banging on the ceiling for them to STFU. The other one came home
About midnight every night where they would what seemed like DRAG THEIR CHAIRS ALL OVER THE FRIGGIN PLACE. Landlord told them to put throw rugs and they refused. So I saw one of them by the mailbox and recited their entire conversation from the night before. They didn’t even care.

I have zero advice other than to watch Tv loud, and get earplugs for night time. Honestly. I suffered for a year before I finally just moved because i couldn’t stand it. Landlord didn’t do much about it

Yes!!! Last year New neighbors moved upstairs from us. They were not friendly at all but whatever we didn’t care. They would turn uppppp til 3am! Run up and down the stairs and slam the front door. They would also drag furniture for hours!!! At one point I looked out the window and questioned if their apt was bigger than mine. Obviously it wasn’t cuz it’s a coop. But I looked out the window to see if they were dragging furniture and tossing it out the window because where the fkkkkkk were they dragging chairs for hours every night?!

I made my husband knock on their door to give them a pack of felt for their furniture. They said thank you. The next morning we found the unopened pack in our mailbox. Jerks.

We also told them that we get up early and then blasting music til 3 am was unacceptable. They stopped.

I have since sold the unit thank god!

Re: have you ever been tortured by an upstairs neighbor?

I did. It was horrible. 3 kids under 5, an infant (she had vacuum going all day too smooth it) and a yapping dog. I would bang on ceiling and complain daily to landlord. They lied about the dog and number of kids so land lord had enough of me complaining so he did kick them out. Well, it backfired on me. They went and filed a complaint about my apt being illegal and It ended up that my landlord had to remove my kitchen bc town inspector was Coming and technically my apt was illegal. It was a disaster and I ended up moving myself as soon as that all went down.

Yes our downstairs neighbor. We heard all their fights, piano playing, cursing etc ALL the time. I cant tell u how many times we complained to our landlord. Finally I couldnt take it anymore (my kids were little and couldnt sleep plus the cursing etc was just too much). Landlord did nothing. So I decided to break the lease and leave. He ended up taking me to court for the one month we owed him. I LOST! Because I never called the cops. Judge said if I called the cops even ONCE I would have won the case. This was a long time ago but I swear I will never live in a two family house again lol. Good luck.

Hahahha I was just going to say this!!! So we rented for 1 year and even though we could barely afford it, we bought a house as soon as our lease was up and even lived with my parents until we closed which was about 8 weeks between our lease being up and closing. And we walked away with no joke $2500 in the bank, but it was worth it looking back. My old neighbor smoked so much stuff, shit I didn’t even know you could smoke and would drink all day. It was awful, then when he would come off his binges he would puke for hours on end. I was done. Then to add to it, my upstairs neighbor poured motor oil down the drain and were sitting watching tv and heard out kitchen flooding, all the motor oil backing out into our apartment. And lastly was the couple next door going through the nastiest divorce I’ve ever heard and they had 2 small kids that would literally toss themselves into walls..... it was awful.....
Needless to say, I’m glad we bought a house and even though it may have seemed like it at the time, it was a good move and we have thankfully been able to replace most of our down payment.... if the person cannot move, I would suggest maybe trying to sound proof with rugs and whatnot

Re: have you ever been tortured by an upstairs neighbor?

I’ve never been “tortured” by an upstairs neighbour, but one lady across the all would complain if I used garlic in my cooking. She eventually wrote a letter to the housing manager, but no one really cared because it was a ridiculous complaint.

My upstairs neighbour is a bit kooky, but she’s a night owl, so I don’t care. It’s early morning noise that bothers me.

have you ever been tortured by an upstairs neighbor?

Every apartment I lived in, I lived next to crazies. One I was upstairs and the landlord was downstairs - he beat his wife. I called the cops after hearing her screaming and then he threatened me. Obviously I moved. Another I lived in a converted garage so the door to the house kitchen was in my living room. I heard everything. He was a coke head and was taking my rent and not telling his wife. He pulled a gun on her one night, again called the cops and moved out. Then in a complex townhouse the next door neighbors were college kids. They would park in my driveway and block my car in the garage, have karaoke parties until 4 in the morning which I could hear clearly through the walls, partying all days of the week. They were eventually kicked out. Then the other side, a nice couple moved in until the swat team showed up at my apartment and tore open my walls because they were heroin dealers and hiding the drugs in the walls. Another I had an old woman upstairs from me and she complained about me all the time. She would bang the ceiling, scream through the floor. It was such BS because I was working in the city and gone from 5 am until 8 pm and then went to sleep when I came home. I wasn't home on the weekends either because I was out. In one of her complaint letters she told the landlords I was having wild sex orgies and it sounded like wild animals. I wish! I wasn't even dating when I lived there, I just got divorced. She was nuts and they moved her to a single level unit. I hate apartments, everyone is crazy.

Re: have you ever been tortured by an upstairs neighbor?

Downstairs, 2 times now.
1st was a crazy old lady who heard noise ALL the time. Drove maintenance crazy with all her complaints, noise from the crawlspace, from the walls, from outside.Called the cops on us a lot, they finally got fed up with her and rang our bell at 3:30 in the morning. Every time they came, our apartment was dark and quiet. duh, we were sleeping. They told her never to call again.
She slammed her doors constantly, turned her locks numerous times. Cooked the smelliest food and never opened a window. She was just flucking nuts. Yelled at her aides all the time. Everyone was stupid.
The night she died I cracked open a bottle of champagne.

2nd set of neighbors, both smoke, heavily. My apartment smells like an ashtray. I need to tell them again that they need to do something to contain the smoke and to eliminate it. They also slam doors, and let their grandkids run thru the apartment for hours.
They complained about my creaking floors.

DH and I are going to start looking for houses soon.
I love my apartment, love my neighborhood, been here for 20 years. I can't stand shared walls anymore.

Eta, forgot to add about the crazy old lady, she would activate her Life Alert, just to test it. At any time of day or especially night. The intercom system is LOUD. First time I heard it, I thought people were in my living room.

Re: have you ever been tortured by an upstairs neighbor?

In one apartment the neighbor would yell at wife every afternoon, presumably throwing every piece of furniture at the wall each day from the sounds of it. The neighbors on the other side lit a tea light and set the whole apartment complex on fire so that was the end of that home.

The next apartment upstairs was supposed to be 1 woman living there but she had at least 6 people living here and multiple kids that would have dance parities at 11:30pm each night. Apparently they had friends recently released from prison that weren’t sure which door to knock on so we kept getting criminals knocking on our door and getting letters from correctional facilities addressed to us that were supposed to be for them. One postcard said, “Getting out October 2007, Coming to see to you soon!!” We moved before then lol.
