I turned 16 in 91. I’m old
I remember going to a bunch. Most at halls. All over the top and ridiculous. But fun. I didn’t have one. My parents were broke. I have no idea what my kids are going to want.
ETA. My husbands cousins daughter had one. It was ridiculous. All the kids were drinking and it was just a mess. No thanks
I have you beat. I turned 16 in 90! Nobody I knew had a big party, but to be honest I really don't remember much from when i was 16. Maybe they did and I just don't remember. I had a party in my parent's house with some family and close friends. Catered in a hero and such.
LOL - I really have you all beat
turned 16 in 1983 and there were NO over the top sweet 16's - gotta love the 80s

I turned 18 in 1988. I know one SS was a backyard pool party, one was at a nice restaurant, one was in the girl's basement. Fun but not over the top, definitely. But there were a few kids whose parents rented out discos or similar. But those were not the norm.
My DD is almost 11 and has a few close friends, but is definitely an introvert. I will be very surprised if she wants a big party in 5 years. (It's not in the budget. ). But I'd be open to either a splurg-y family trip or a supervised overnight in the city with her friends.
