I work in Grand Central- if I lived in fear, I'd have to quit my job. It's unreasonable and sounds like an excuse.
This. And it might be an excuse for this woman but I work on LI now and no one in my office goes to the city, ever. They're all afraid of it. They act like you cross the east river and get mugged. It's bizarre. None of them have even mentioned yesterday's attack yet they all came in crying about Vegas. They talk about 9/11 like it was some kind of show. It's disgusting and whenever it comes up it takes everything in my not to scream that my husband is in the city every day as are my friends and family and up until a few months ago, me.
Then I remind myself that no one in the city wants a bunch of LIers visiting anyway
Your coworkers sound like shittty horrible people.
I go back and forth between thinking they're really shittty or just really incredibly dumb. They are, by far, the stupidest, most ignorant people I've ever met.
I've taken to reminding them that we're far more likely to die in a car accident because no one on this godforsaken island can drive.

I think we should use this as a time to practice kindness.
Not everyone handles stress the same way. Exact same incident can illicit opposite responses in different people.
Good for you if you can shake it off and live without fear. It's great that you've never felt debilitated by fear or anxiety or anything else. So take a moment and appreciate that instead of judging someone else because you never know what it's like to be in someone else's shoes.
But the OP says this coworker doesn't complain about going into the city for a social gathering. Isn't it possible this woman could be mocking those with true debilitating anxiety and making light of their situation because she doesn't want to attend an early meeting? Sadly, the city is safest after an attack.

Re: Living in fear
I hate to admit it, but I am one of those that live in fear. I never go into the city anymore. Ever since I had kids the thought of big stadiums, traveling, malls, NYC... scares me. You're absolutely right... this can happen anywhere AND trust me... I wish I could build a shelter for my family (yes, I'm nuts... my poor DH.. LOL).

Listen I hear what you are saying and to a point, those thoughts run through my mind too. Especially with DD. I sometimes pause when I think about taking her to the city. I think to myself- is it fair that I am putting her in a potentially dangerous situation? What if something happens. Myself is one thing, my daughter is another. I think about that Ariana Grande concert in the UK and I question whether I will ever feel comfortable taking her to a concert even. Even in the movies, I sometimes get a bit freaked out and start looking for escape routes. And then you hear about the shooting in a Walmart yesterday and realize- NOWHERE is safe. So I get it, I do. And it stinks that we have to live like this. But I have to push those thoughts aside otherwise I'd be debilitated by them. So it's really a coping mechanism for me

Well you will all be happy to know that she conquered her debilitating fear and anxiety and made it into NYC today . Just one day later. Amazing!

I'm with you! I rarely to go NYC, concerts, sporting events, I hate driving over bridges, going to malls. I've become a total hermit. I have anxiety every day putting my kids on the school bus. I know there is absolutely nothing that worrying will accomplish--but I can't help it.

Re: Living in fear
I understand the fear and anxiety. The reality that we live in a horribly violent world will keep me up at night. I try my best to not think about it so I can go about my day otherwise I'd never leave the house again. I guess I just don't understand this fear singling out Manhattan. No where is safe anymore. These things happen everywhere.
Colin Ferguson opened fire and killed 6 people on the LIRR in Long Island, not on the NYC subway. It just doesn't make much sense to think you're somehow safer being further away from Manhattan.
