I had NO IDEA you could check firearms and ammo as long as you declare them and then just pick them up at baggage claim.

my dh was under the impression you could only check the gun, no ammo; but apparently anything goes!

I'm also puzzled by the fact that if you don't have a concealed carry permit in the area you fly to, how are you allowed to even posses it? Imagine people are flying into JFK with guns also?? This is so f on so many levels.

I'm so damn tired of "prayers". FLUCKING DO SOMETHING YOU GOOD FOR NOTHING CONGRESS.

(No flame at all to anyone sending prayers, its more of a comment on our entire congress that just sits by. For god's sake, they aren't even LEGALLY allowed to study gun violence).

Lobbyist following a$$holes.

YUP, this exactly.

He was a military guy? Are we now going to start a "military registry" along with the "Muslim registry"?? Chat Icon

From what I've just seen on the news.. he was a soldier who served and when he came back, was discharged and sent for psychiatric help. At that moment, his weapons should have been confiscated and held until evaluations showed he wasn't a danger.

That, if any, should be a change in gun laws. A person who owns a gun, official or civilian, is showing known psychiatric problems - weapons should be removed from their possession.

Uggh, common sense gun laws and we can't get them passed. Who knows whether he had it legally but it was declared in his luggage.

Similar with the Keith Lamont Scott case. Why did a man with a traumatic brain injury have access to a gun? Obviously a very different end result but neither of these people should be carrying a gun. Chat Icon

After Sandy Hook I thought we'd see some changes- but if that didn't do it, nothing will.

I have a different thought about this that I have never shared because someone will probably take it the wrong way. But here goes.

I believe that if one of these gun lobby loving Republicans had something happen to someone very close to them, they'd change their tune.

To be very clear, I AM NOT SAYING I WOULD WANT THIS TO HAPPEN OR THAT I AM ADVOCATING FOR IT. But ultimately, it has to become personal for these people, because they don't really care about the health and welfare of the public.

Sort of like Senator Portman - his son being gay caused him to reverse his position and support gay marriage.

I feel like the FBI and the VA, his family, and his doctors all dropped the ball on his care. I also feel like why did the fact that he only checked in a gun with ammo not set off any alarm bells with any airline personnel when he checked in from Alaska to Florida. To me, that should have raised serious questions.

I completely agree with your line of thinking. It happens when people who are pro life need an abortion and when their child comes out as a homosexual. I would never want something bad to happen to anyone.

I know. Chat Icon And I almost wrote the same thing- I would never want that to happen but it might be the only way anything will change.

I don't agree with this but their reply would be well if someone else had a gun they would have been able to shoot & kill the gunman before he shot too many people. The problem with that (that they don't see) is that once people start shooting it will be like the Wild West....everyone will just start shooting which would cause more panic and destruction. Plus it makes the job tougher for police...how do they know who is the "good guy" with the gun and who is the "bad guy" with the gun. Like I said I don't agree with this but it's what their response will be. Chat Icon

IMO mental illness is the problem here. Anyone could walk into any airport and start shooting, the fact he flew on a plane or flew with his gun (checked in the belly of the plane and NOT accessible on the flight) really means nothing. In this case it seems this was not terrorism but mental illness.

I am sorry but red flags should have been raised a while ago and he shouldn't have had access to a gun or been able to carry a military card.

Things did change. In the tri state area you can't have assault weapons. However it's the law abiding citizens that now adhere to this rule, the criminals and people who want to do mass shootings won't.

Like hard drugs are illegal. Does that stop the drug addicts?

I thought the same thing. But I have a family member who was hiding under a desk during the Columbine shooting and he and his family are big supporters of no gun control. It's mind boggling to me.
