Shots fired at Roosevelt Field Mall

According to people posting on News12's FB post about it, there was a shoplifter that knocked over a clothing rack which made a loud noise and caused people to panic and think it was a gunshot.

Saw this on Twitter:

According to PD scanner.... shoplifter hit over a clothing rack. People panicked... rightfully so.... but everybody is safe. Merry Christmas, enjoy your shopping and be safe.

Shots fired at Roosevelt Field Mall

SPOKESMAN FOR SIMON PROPERTIES (mall management):
Apparently a shoplifter in Macy's knocked over a major display case that crashed on the floor. Smaller items in the display case fell all over the floor.. The display case crashing sounded like gunshots and created a panic.
Macy's and the mall is in the process of being re-opened.

Re: Shots fired at Roosevelt Field Mall

I was there when this happened. I was on the second floor of Nordstrom just about to go down the escalator when someone said, "don't go down there, something is happening." Then all of a sudden people started running full speed out of the mall saying that someone was shooting. When I got into the parking lot on the second level there were several people crying and very upset, as if they had actually witnessed shots being fired.

I'm so glad that it wasn't a shooting and that everyone is ok. I'm so shocked that so many people were so visibly shaken, really crying and so upset, when there wasn't an actual incident.

ETA: I left my car at the mall and a very nice woman gave me a ride to Target where my Dad came to pick me up. Tons of cop cars and ambulances showed up very quickly.

Wow that's crazy but I wouldn't say too surprising. I think people are more on edge this time of year and given our recent history of gun violence in this country all it takes is one person's error to create that kind of insanity.

ITA. There was a similar incident at the Danbury Fair Mall on Black Friday- a fight broke out in the food court and the buzz quickly grew into gunshots even though there were none. People are very edgy and understandably so.

I just hope that all those cops and resources that had to rush there because of a display case falling down weren't needed at a real emergency because people will cause panic for no reason.
Yelling gun and shots fired when it was just a display case falling is on par with yelling fire in a crowded theater. It's dangerous.

I am so frustrated with the media causing panic for no reason. This is not the first time we hear things like - shots fired- and it turns out to be something different. Very irresponsible. If someone I loved was there and I saw that on the news I would be in a total panic. Glad everyone is safe. Just wish media knew facts before putting it out there.

I agree!
That was the 1st thing I thought of when I heard it was just a crashing display case.
Way to do some research before reporting to cause unnecessary panic.

agree. I was annoyed that they went so far as to report it on news outlets as shots fired. They got so many people scared to go out and finish their shopping for nothing.

No, I wasn't worried. I just reacted in the moment, wanted to get as far away as possible, and this woman was about my age and seemed very nice. I figured the chances of her being some kind of crazy freak were low and I was the one who asked her for a ride. She was so wonderfully nice. I really appreciated her kindness.

The image that sticks with me most was this Dad with two young kids. One was in a stroller and he was trying to run with the one kid while pushing the stroller. As soon as he got outside e Nordsteom doors, but inside the second set of doors he grabbed the kid out of the stroller, football held both kids, one in each arm, left the stroller with all his bags and sprinted away and up the parking lot, I assume to his car.

I know it was a false alarm but it was truly pretty scary.
