Shots fired at grade school - everyone ok

WTF is wrong with people??!! I wish i never had to let DS out of my sight - there is something seriously wrong in this country if you can't even bring your children to elementary school and feel they are safe there.

Scary, scary stuff! I know what you mean! Stories like this make me afraid of everything. This is no way to live. Poor kids. Thankfully they are all ok. I can't imagine how their families must have felt when the story broke.

Just saw the details on the news...the secretary deserves a medal for talking to the guy, emptying his pockets, etc. Thank God everyone was safe!

I'm sick over this. There has to be something we can do. Our children's safety shouldn't be political!!! there has to be better ways we can prevent this from happening.

I honestly could hear my heart pounding in my chest when I saw this today...I have LOVED having my DD home from school for the summer and I know the same sense of dread will fill me when I drop her back at the school door in less than 3 weeks. It should not be like this.Chat Icon

If 26 people can be killed in an elementary school without anything really changing, then nothing's going to be done. As long as felons and the mentally ill can get guns, this kind of thing will continue to happen.

. This makes me crazy! I don't understand how we as a country, we as parents can turn a blind eye to this!!! We have to do something!!

Unfortunately it's all about the money and the hold the NRA has on the throats of politicians. It's disgusting.

Re: Shots fired at grade school - everyone ok

A man walked into an Atlanta-area elementary school, ordered a school employee to call a local TV station and fired multiple shots at police Tuesday.

This was clearly done because the media continues to romanticize these criminals for ratings. And while I agree that mentally ill and felons should not have access to weapons, there also needs to be some kind of security in the schools. It seems like these people are just walking right into the building.

I'm glad no one was hurt.

But what kind of security? My daughter's school has "security" in the form of locked doors and cameras. Sandy Hook had a similar setup, if I recall correctly. And yet even if they'd had an armed police officer or guard, would s/he have been any match for this kid blasting his way through the door? I think it would have just been one more body.

ITA - i think the press sensationalizes these stories and then you have a disturbed person who thinks its a great way for their 10 minutes of fame. Sickening. I wish the press would stop giving these criminals so much attention Chat Icon
