Those who potty trained early
Can you tell me how it went? Any tips or advice?
We are a week in so there's no going back but it's been hard. There are days she does great and has no accidents most of the day but as she gets tired she starts having accidents. She has only ever told me once that she needed to go so I have to watch her like a hawk. It's exhausting having to constantly watch for the peepee dance. Really hoping she catches on more very soon and not sure if I should be doing anything differently.

Sounds like she may not be ready. When we trained DS, he asked for underwear and that was it. We never looked back and in a year, he's had only a handful of accidents and they were all overnight. Never during the day.

Same. I found that when she was ready, it was easy. If it's that hard, they may not be ready. Same with taking away the bottles, the pacifier. I learned the hard way that sometimes you have to follow their lead and wait for them to be ready. And when they are- it's like night and day. DD never had an accident- even at night- once she trained when SHE was ready.

couldn't agree more with all of this! DD trained early and had zero accidents. Attempted to train DS and well....3 months later we are still in pullups. What we decided to do with him was put him in pullups instead of diapers. This way, if he chooses to go to the bathroom he can go by himself...but if not he's still in a pullup and we are not worried about accidents.

We trained dd the week before she turned 2.
It's now 3 months later, and we still have to watch her. 50% she'll tell us, 50% of the time we just tell her she has to go. At the end of the day though, she's potty trained, and I would absolutely take having to tell her to go potty over changing diapers.

Re: Those who potty trained early
See, after she was trained, I kind of missed the freedom of diapers. I was always worried she might have an accident (she never did but it was on my mind) Long car trips became an issue with having to stop in filthy rest stop bathrooms. We'd be out to dinner and she ALWAYS had to go right when my food arrived.
I would say to DH- it was so much easier when she could just pee in her damn diaper.

Yup, all of this. I am actually not looking forward to training DS. We travel a lot and are always on the go and diapers are so easy. I HATE public restrooms and dread the day when I have to start using them with him

Those who potty trained early
I definitely see that maybe she's not fully ready, I just can't see giving up after all this effort. I also see all the ways she is ready. With my oldest, she was capable so early on but refused. She was terrified and miserable. The day after she turned 3 i finally convinced her to try it and that was it,she was trained,no accidents. Do I get that but she also could have done it so much sooner is she wasn't so against it. I felt like at a young age they're easier to mold and tell what to do,not so in their head. My kids also have great control early on and don't have to pee often which can make it harder to train. I don't want to end up being super late in the game when she's definitely capable already.

I worried about the same thing when I trained dd1 but she rarely has to go when we're out. Even at home I'm usually being her to go bc she hardly ever pees. I have an iron bladder too so they get it from me I guess lol

Those who potty trained early
My dd trained early- I did a modified elimination communication routine with her starting very young. I never put any pressure on her to train just encouraged her to "try". We used pull ups for a couple of months and when she was initiating asking we switched her to panties and it was a disaster. I put her back in pull ups and made a reward chart and let her pick out a few small toys as rewards. I also used candy as a reinforcer immediately after each time she successfully went on the potty. A week into the reward chart she asked for panties and this time was successful. She has had an occasional accident when playing with something new --it has always bee urine and usually at home. It is a little frustrating when it happens but my pediatrician said it is common.

I definitely agree. It's so nice not to have to change a toddler poop diaper but now we have to worry about accidents if it's a longish car ride or dealing with public bathrooms. Sooooooo gross. We've been to a few places and events that only had porta potties. Luckily dh takes her in bc I refuse lol.

Those who potty trained early
We were just out for two full hours and she kept her pull up dry the whole time. These are the things that make me think I should keep going.

You didn't say how old she is? With my dd, we tried around age 2.5 bc she seemed interested in her potty and she was excited about her rewards (stickers) but she kept having accidents, especially when excited or distracted. So I decided to go back to diapers for a couple months until she was more ready. When I tried again, about 2 months before she turned 3, she was fully trained after 1 day. It all clicked for her, and I'm glad I didn't push it earlier on and drive us all crazy.

Re: Those who potty trained early
Don't quit, she's doing great if she held it for 2 hours. It would probably be easier if you waited for her to get older, but I don't think that's really a reason to not follow her lead right now and go for it. I trained early. I agree that public bathrooms are gross, but that's only once in a while vs. changing diapers all day long.

I would actually find this so much harder! But I don't consider it trained until they get up and go on their own without constant prompting...so the half trained would make me crazy.

So today she had no pee accidents and only one poop accident. Even kept her pull up dry the few times we were out. I'll take it! I'm holding out hope she'll start initiating soon bc she did do it once. It's definitely harder than my with my oldest but hopefully it gets easier soon enough.

She turns two next month. At 2.5 my oldest was terrified of anything potty related so I wanted to try earlier this time while she is still interested and there's no fear.

Eh she doesn't have accidents-it's more that I keep an eye on the clock. If she hasn't asked to go in the past hour/hour and a half or so I just tell her she has to. I don't think i would really consider that half trained.

Re: Those who potty trained early
I trained at 22 months. We did it via 3 day method... we actually did it as soon as we found that DD could communicate with us about potty. If I remember correctly... a core thing is not to remind them about peeing so they can connect urge with release with potty. We had accidents with both kids, but very few (like when they are absorbed in play with cousins). Kids were totally set in a week.

Yes 3 day does say not to ask them if they have to go, just remind them to tell you. But it also says if you see they obviously have to go to take them so that's what I've been doing. I think I'm going to try waiting a little longer before taking her to see if she will ask me and see how that goes.

I don't know if it was a fluke or a coincidence but the potty watch somehow triggered something with DD and wiring a few days of wearing it, she began telling us she needed to go. She's had one or two accidents since and that was over a month ago.

I think that's a good idea. I did the cold turkey thing of letting kids pee themselves & it worked fast. I'm sure there are many ways to potty train. I agree about the timing... much easier younger than older with fears!
