Dd will be 18 months next week. We've been noticing some signs that I think might mean she could be ready or getting ready to learn about the potty. In the past week, she brought me a clean diaper when she had pooped, and another time ran up to me patting her diaper and said 'poo' after she pooped. So it seems she's becoming somewhat aware of when she needs a new diaper, but still for the most part she doesn't seem to care that she has a dirty diaper.

I've been letting her watch when I use the bathroom and she seems very interested. I always tell her 'pee pee' and 'potty' so now she knows and repeats those words. And when I ask her where the potty is she runs to the bathroom and pats the toilet.

I got her a little potty and when I showed it to her today she sat on it right away and said 'potty' and 'pee pee'. And when I asked her 'where do you pee pee?' she pointed into the bowl of the potty.

So, basically, my question is what's next? At this age would she even be able to actually start to potty train? She can't speak yet other for some random words. So I don't know how she would really be able to let me know when she has to go, or even if she'd be able to control her bladder yet.

If your child potty trained early, how old were they and how did you go about it? Dh thinks I'm going to confuse her by letting her sit on the potty with her pants and diaper on, but my thinking is why not let her get used to it and feel excited about it?

I'm currently potty training my 18 month old dd (no diapers). By day 3, I noticed that her bladder control got much better. She's able to go 3 to 4 hours before having to use the bathroom. She wakes up most mornings dry. She doesn't always tell me she needs to use the bathroom, so I usually take her at the 3/4 hour mark. I have been able to take her out (up to 5 hours so far) without any accidents. She even used the public toilet with any problems.

She still has about 1 accident per day and it's usually when I'm not in proximity to her. But hey, I'll take it over having to deal with diapers! We've been training for about 1.5 weeks.

I say go for it...you have nothing to lose :)

Eta: dd has been accident free since this post!

We potty trained DS at 18-19 months. He wasn't talking much, but new "pee pee" and "poopie" words.
We got him 2 little potties: one for the bathroom and one for the living room, Elmo potty book ( it made noises), DVD from the library and we let him pick his own underwear.
We made a huge deal out of it! He threw all of his diapers/ pull up in the garbage!!!
Then we fallowed the 3 day rule! We was naked and thought it was the funniest thing ever! The first day he had 4 accidents, the second and third- only one. The fourth day he put his undies on and we went to the Bronx Zoo!

He had maybe 5 accidents since then! He is almost 4 now!

And he got a few M&MS for a peepee and a Matchbox car for a poopie for the first month or so!

Did DD at 20 months.
Waited for her to be able to tell me "pee pee".
Then waited for a 3 day weekend.
Did the 3 day method & worked like a charm.
She's never regressed & has fewer accidents that my DS who is almost 4 (She's now 2.5).
We do diapers at night, even though she doesn't want it!

Have you looked into the three day method? For my 18 month old it took about 1.5 weeks to be completely accident free, but I def recommend the method!

I just looked it up and I don't know if my dd is ready yet because she can't communicate well enough yet. I don't think I'd be able to explain underwear yet and how we try to keep it dry.

I think for now ill just keep encouraging her to take interest in the potty. She already liked sitting on it and today I gave her a little piece of toilet paper and she pretended to wipe herself. I'm not ready to let her go diaper free quite yet. I'm thinking maybe in a month or two when its warmer and hopefully she'll be able to communicate with us better and let us know when she has to go to the bathroom
