5 year old tantrums

Is it normal for kids to still be throwing tantrums at age 5? My ds will be 5 next month and lately he's been throwing a lot of tantrums. Usually just screaming yelling and crying, not violent. It mostly happens when I tell him it's time to go to an activity, to school, to the store etc.

We are dealing with some changes right now. I'm expecting ds3 in July. Ds2 will be moving into ds1's room soon to make space. He'll be starting Kindy soon. And we just started him in tball at his request.

I'm not sure if it's just too much or every 5 yo is like this or if I should be concerned.

Re: 5 year old tantrums

Sounds pretty normal. Just like with babies... kids go through phases too and each one is different and handles things differently. DS1 is almost 7. He is my angel and always pretty much a good kid, but he doesn't handle change as well. As he gets older he deals with it better. DS2 is fine with change, but he's my mischievous one. LOL!
I also notice a month before his bday for DS1 is his worst. Maybe bc we talk about him having to grow up more, talk to him about changes bc of getting older, etc. Not sure, but it gets better.
It's a lot of changes and that's how your DS is handling it. Still have to be strong and punish him, but maybe talk to him about feelings and change. I have to do that with DS1. Even small things like telling him we're going to one place, but we throw him a curve ball and we don't go or stop somewhere else first sets him off. He's fine after and we talk about it, but it's just him.

my DS is 5, and can be the same way! we don't have as much change going on as it sounds like you do... but he still gets upset. I SAH with him, and he's our only kid. he gets SO SO mad when i try to rush him out of the house "FINE!!! Just leave me here!!!" :-0 or when he's been playing with a friend, and its time to leave sometimes that sets him off, too.
From what i read, its all about how often the tantrums happen, and how long they last. if something small sets him off for 45 minutes--- that MIGHT be an issue. or if the tantrums are happening ALL the time.... BUT to me, it sounds like just a normal reaction to all the change he has going on. maybe try to make some one on one time with him for a little bit... or just talk to him that all of the changes are gonna be ok...

This sounds like my DS. Doesn't last long, but he hates leaving some place when he's having fun. Just need to talk with him about saying goodbye and we'll see them again soon. Kids! LOL
