summers for school aged kids...

for any of you workign parents with school aged kids, how do you handle their summers off? just sign them up for a bunch of camps? hire a summer nanny? have family watch them?

my son just turned 5 and doesn't start K until next year--- but i'm thinking ahead. right now, i'm a SAHM--- but plan to go back at least part time once he's is in school every day. but just not sure how summers would work.... when i was growing up, my parents owned their own business, so my mom could be flexible and would always be around in the summer with my sister and i. and my MIL never worked, so she was always home with DH in the summers, too--- so we're not sure how "normal" families handle it HAHAHA

We do "camp" at our kid's school.
Then my vacation (typically 1 week).
Then my parents (staycation at grandmas)

When my kids were younger I took off the week right after the last day of school and then the week before school started and then they went to camp for 8 weeks.

We've done camp through our daycare. DS1 is now in 2nd grade. This year we're going to do regular camps as he has definitely outgrown the daycare camp. Camps in our area have before and after care, which makes ii much more manageable for working parents.

We send DS to a camp that's 8 weeks. I don't want to have to deal with multiple camps and scheduling around them so we looked for one that had the longest number of weeks. There's still a week before and a week after we have to cover (last year my mom came up to watch him for the first week and I took off the last week).

I do similar.

I do the week after school ends, the last 2 weeks of the summer my ex takes one week and I take one week.

Day Camp with a before and after care. Like the above poster, I take off the week school lets out and the week before it goes back bc camp usually isn't happening then and they go to Camp for the 8 weeks in between.
